Who the hell cares if the kids are ready for an apocalypse? If it happens tomorrow, the neighbours kids are the first ones I'm eating.
As for the LHC, I think they underestimated the amount of energy/radiation given off by the collisions. It's currently being limited to 60% operational capacity for a couple of years, I think, then they'll upgrade it.
Nvidia's new Fermi cards suffered the same problem, hence the delays.
