Starmaker: Fantasy-style elves are fictional people that exhibit well-publicized characteristics in settings where evolution and genetics don't exist.
avatar
Shaolin_sKunk: Who's to say they don't exist? Kind of hard to say if no one in-universe has bothered to find out. I'd imagine "it was magic" is a good enough explanation for them.
(Hooray for thread hijack; I feel strongly enough about this topic - the words, not elves - to continue.)
The books/games/whatever say it, by dint of contradicting earthly scientific facts at every opportunity. So "do elves possess enough distinctive characteristics to be counted as a separate species,l similar to how wolves and dogs are" isn't a valid question, it throws an error at compilation. And because the word "species", as demonstrated by Elmofongo above, conjures "humans and chimpanzees", which is not how elves work, it's a wrong word [kook alert] to use.

Yes, there are absolutely sci-fi settings where the question of elven status is conclusively answered. Which is why I specifically called out fantasy elves.

Elmofongo: Mighty whitey with an ultra-special-snowflake bloodline?
Like Aragorn.

Forgive me for saying this, but at least Aragorn does not have the typical blonde hair and blue eyes, he actually has raven black hair and grey eyes as said in the books. Samething for Arwen as described in the books.
Oh my, my early Commodore 64 days are coming around..

Debut Trailer looks good, nice to see an official entry for a new Gauntlet!

Shaolin_sKunk: Dogs and wolves can interbreed but they're still separate species. I feel I should mention that even taxonomists have a hard time deciding what constitutes a new species.
Dogs and wolves are the exact same species (Canis Lupus), so that's not the best example - however, they can interbreed with most other canids (such as coyotes) just to give the aforementioned taxonomists a hard time.

amok: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-03-17-gauntlet-reboot-announced

"Warner Bros. has announced a reboot of the cult classic arcade role-playing dungeon crawler Gauntlet.

The new Gauntlet is described as a "completely modernised" action RPG, and is due out this summer for PC via Steam, with support for SteamOS and the Steam Machines."

Well this is a surprise, Users on PC Gamer's comment section are upset that this game will be a Steam exclusive

Kewl. Learn somethin' new everyday.

edit:Lions and tigers would probably have been a better example.

Trailer looks great but since I found no redeeming qualities in magicka whatsoever I have no much fate in this...
It was only a matter of time. Was wondering about this the other day. Steam only? Why oh Why?. Sigh

Eh, i think it should be obvious. This is clearly a 4-player game, won't be surprised if they ditch the single player completely (hope not). Such games are a magnet for steam couse it's probably waaay easier to code the matchmaking steamworks multiplayer than make a dedicated drm-free alternative.
Quite sad. I loved the arcade game back in the day and also C64. .Ill pass on the Steamworked game.
I pretty much only saw "completely modernised", "Steam" and "Steam OS".

Yeah... moving on.
Vote for it, if you want it here on GOG instead of Steam!

Wishlist: Gauntlet (2014)

FreedomWings: "...Elf..." LOL racist. (joking around)
I was going to post something about that too .... good thing I read the thread, for once :)
Spooky, was thinking of my CBM64 days of Gauntlet the other day & now this :)
It looks funky, but steam only? *sigh*
Then again, I could just play any of the Alien Breed games & pretend it`s Gauntlet 2.0 ;)

As for Hammerwatch, had no idea it existed & better still, it`s on GOG.
Damn you wallet, HIIIIIIIIDE!!
