& hello to (probably) lots of games that`ll no longer work, time to start sorting through your "games I must play soon & fast" list ;)

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why you don't make your games reliant on third-party online services. On this occasion we can be thankful that it's 'only' the multiplayer which is being mothballed, but still...

When the same thing happens to Steam years down the line, the cries of foul are going to be huge.
This is why I'd prefer that games support simple LAN multiplayer.
And the reason why I refuse to buy StarCraft 2...

I'd say good riddance to Gamespy were it not for the fact it sucks for games that are dependant on it.

I don't think that the single player part of those games will stop working... I've never installed GameSpy...
hmmm Borderlands, Majesty 2, FEAR 2, GTA 4, Neverwinter Nights 2 stuff, Warhammer soulstorm and Star wars EaW are the only titles that I can think of that I am bothered about.

But yeah, shouldnt effect SP stuff

Seriously, wtf. Some which stand out for PC are

FEAR
FEAR 2,
Dawn of War Soulstorm,
Dawn of War Gold Edition
Painkiller Overdose,
Sid Meier Railroads
Stronghold 2

edit: okay, it seems it's only MP that's affected, afaik. But still, wtf.

I missed this bit of news. Never liked it but bloody sucks for those who use it.

At this point, there are so many Steam users that I'd be afraid of potential riots in certain parts of the world if they shut down.

Hopefully, should they ever terminate, it will be a gradual decline so that by the time they cease operations, they won't have too many dependants.

Games need to support LAN more and also: an open-source client/server solution (or at least, a solution that uses an open public standard with documents clearly specifying how everything should behave kinda like web standards now for browsers) as an alternative to what Gamespy and Valve provides would solve many problems.

That would open up doors to anybody potentially providing multiplayer hosting services and wouldn't make everyone's multiplayer experience solely dependant on the fate of one company.

Gearbox claims they're "looking into a solution" for Borderlands. But it's Gearbox so who knows. :p

They should just simply include a dedicated server in the game... thus if the main servers go down, fans still can run them somewhere...
Unfortunately lately most developers seem to go the "easy" way of using some crap service...

Getting networking right for a real-time game is hard as it involves multiple hard to make tradeoffs.

Creating an in-house networking engine that is tweakable depending on the game to solve those problems is a massive overhead and it's also a lot of redundant work across organizations (in the grand scheme of things, it's more efficient if all companies use an unified solution).

In some cases, having a third party provide a pre-made solution to that problem makes the difference between the game supporting multiplayer or not when smaller gaming companies with a tighter budget are involved. Having to re-create the wheel from the ground up is a big corporation's game.

DayZSA is safe as doesn`t use it.
Arma3 - https://twitter.com/bohemiainteract/status/452134234598014976
ArmaOA - https://twitter.com/bohemiainteract/status/452133768330231808
(& just when I`ve got back into DayZmod.../cry)

Sucks though, what about those that play these & flat out refuse to use Steam, do they get refunds or just screwed...?

This is why I prefer DRM free by miiiiiiiiiiles, but there are far too many games reliant on third party DRM or are steam only.

It will screw up my online-being a nuisance & worse, some of my co-op games that me & cronies play *cough* try to get each other killed *cough* are at risk.

Ah well, such is life it seems...

*crosses fingers*

Since there are lots of graphic engines, I'm pretty sure there are also networking engines. The point is: they shouldn't restrict gamers to their own servers only (though they do because of DRM:P), but instead offer a choice.

And even DRM free games aren't completely safe... Let's take the recently released AOW3... which uses the developer's servers for MP. DRM-free huh?

Yeah, same goes for many single player games or close to similar.
I still play Darkspore often, but you can only play it via their servers, even if playing solo or at times with a cronie.

Silly devs... ;p
