high rated

He is the ultimate mainstream developer aiming at the largest male audience possible, so he sees doom in current sales numbers trending toward gaming as a whole remaining somewhat niche. I don't blame him for being worried about his career and millions. At the same time though I can laugh and not agree, because I literally think the best thing to ever happen to the gaming industry would be all these publishers going out of business.

Middle of the road means boring and appealing to as many people as possible... the AAA games are the middle of the road ones.

He might have meant the microtransaction-laden, Zynga style games though which I hope is not the path developers take, since Echo Bazaar was the only facebook game I liked and even it I couldn't play because of the "limited actions per day" style.

I can't believe that they are still today peoples using the "if we get rid of used games/piracy/etc... prices will go down" silly argument.
The only time the industry managed, at least for some time to nearly get rid of piracy, not only the prices didn't go down but they even increase significantly. If piracy and second hand sales ever disappear the industry will either simply find another scapegoat or just use a BS excuse like that they didn't lower the price because instead they decided to increase the "quality".
Thinking that it would result in them lowering their price is naive at best; if anything I doubt we would see that many xx% of Steam or other sales if it wasn't for piracy and an attempt to fight it.

There would've been more mobile and PC games anyway because the recession and HD make it more difficult for high budget releases to be profitable anyway.

Battle.net doesn't make money from selling games, it makes money from selling monthly subscriptions and virtual items.
