"MCV reports that Comet’s closure will result in the loss of 6,600 jobs across the UK, and will see the company shell out £2.1 million in unused holiday and back pay. However, the closures haven’t ruled out a potential buyer of the brand just yet, so a last-minute take over could still be possible"

So has anyone from the UK seen their local Comet close down? We don't have em here in Ireland.

Come on man, it is December 18, 2012. Don't use the word, comet.

Before clicking on the thread, that was what I thought too, that someone predicted the fall of a comet, resulting in the closure of all UK stores lol.

Roman5 creating a successfully funny thread for once. Is the end really upon us?!
Yeah, the ones at Gateshead and Durham have already closed a week or two ago. North Shields is the only one left in my area but its a bit of a trek to get to as I am more Durham location.

The UK Tax bill for this closure is a fair amount also :

"Other victims of the collapse include HMRC, which is owed PAYE and VAT sums, and security firm G4S. It is thought that HMRC will suffer a loss of £26m because of the firm’s collapse, but the government is reportedly going to take a £50m hit in a combination of the unpaid tax and also redundancy costs it has agreed to pay to the 6,600 Comet staff. £1.5m will be paid to cover salary arrears and holiday pay."

I have a few friends who work for them and losing their jobs so close to Christmas is hitting them pretty hard
I once went into Comet

I bought a tv or something.
I remember seeing the local news a few weeks ago when Comet closed one of their distribution warehouses and made everyone redundant - I'd never have guessed that the entire business was going under.

I feel for the employees - getting sacked this close to Christmas is one thing, but getting another job in this climate is going to be tough.

Very true. And then everyone has this stigma that not working = lazy scrounger. Fools.
So close to Christmas. I feel sorry for the staff there. It's not going to be easy for them. But Comet's one of those stores that has felt a bit outmoded for some time now.
Keep looking at the skies!

Comet's always been a bit expensive as well. Back in the 90s, it was a fairly lively place. Over the past few years, though, it's become very quiet. I'd walk past and there'd be practically nothing going on in there, not even at Christmas. Their product range is certainly a lot narrower than it was 15 years ago, which hasn't done them any favours. Back then they used to do all kinds of electrical goods, now it was basically cookers, washing machines, tumble dryers and a few TVs.

Funnily enough, I still have my my old C64GS, bought from the Comet store in Plymouth, with the receipt - dated 1990 - still in the box.

They were overpriced and never really made enough of the internet. Their auction site was almost entirely unpromoted and generally there was no reason to choose them over the alternatives. Compare that to say John Lewis where you know you're getting a high quality product at the best price (for that particular model) and Comet just seemed a bit half hearted and a bit meh.

Cameron is a viscous self opinionated bastard! Who wouldn't understand democracy if it slapped him in the face.

There are 400,000 vacancies to go around 2.5m unemployed. That is the core of the problems, anybody who sees it differently probably shouldn't be in work themselves because one can't be competitive with a workforce as small-minded as that.

Oh well at least we don't have rising bills, falling benefits and the bedroom tax to contend with.

Yes, he is pretty thick, isn't he? *trollface*
