I missed the release of Curse Episode 1: Hell Awaits (weird, because I check Moddb regularly), played a bit of it, and I have to say it's one of the most impressive total conversions I have ever played. The art, exploration, and atmosphere are pretty amazing (The fighting's all right).

Their page also has a cool 50's horror style trailer. An important thing to note is the game's as much about exploration as it is about combat. Don't think that you've beaten the level because its' entrance is available to you. If you're stuck on what you're suppossed to do to vanquish the evil on the first level, watch the gameplay demo for a bit on the main menu.
EDIT: Oh, yeah, it's also done by a very small team of people. That's probably why it takes them a while to release the episodes.
