Well, since I like writing and Highlander, I decided to contribute to this thread with a little bit of explanation I've built in a not so distant past about the Immortals. It is basically Ramirez explaining their nature to Connor.

We are immortals, Highlander. The offspring of wizards and alchemists who sought to understand and control nature in its most intimate form. We are born humans and we become one with nature when we reach the natural end of our time among them. When that time comes forcibly early, that cycle is disturbed and we become this: part human, part something else, but incomplete in both ways.

We envy humans in their ability to live and die, to love and breed. Death itself appeals for many of us. Theirs is an existence we can easily relate to. But we are on our path to become something more, a path to an unknown existence that frightens us but also drives our deepest desires.

That's what bonds us together, what draw us to each other. Whenever we are close to a fellow immortal we can feel him and thus we know him. This connection makes us stronger, takes us further into our paths without losing what is left of our humanity. Eventually it also drives us into conflict. We can never be together peacefully for a very long time because of our need to become whole. We'll feel an uncontrollable desire to consume the other, to take from him that small part that will make us more than we are. For some, like the Kurgan, it is a never ending blood thirst that controls their entire existence. For others, like us both, it is an unfortunate uneasy feeling that forces us to part ways eventually. Only on Holy Ground we can resist that urge, for it makes our human part stronger within us. No one of us will ever fight on Holy Ground. It is tradition.

We all accept this reality and face it as a struggle of good against evil. A Game that has lasted thousands of years, but that eventually will come to an end, because the fewer we are, the stronger we are drawn to each other. When that urge becomes unbearably strong a great Gathering will take place and the last few of us will battle until only one remains. What will happen then, none of us really knows, but it is our ultimate goal, our Prize.

This is our quickening, this perpetual struggle to be reborn into something greater and finally complete. It is our path to become something we were meant to be, but couldn't and also a path to recover something we have lost, our humanity.
