tinyE: The Chicago police would. If it was 1920.

keeveek: But they couldn't break your legs online.
Touche!

keeveek: There is an episode of Fringe where piracy leads the world to corruption and people are turning into a fish-human hybrids. Pretty scary shit.

Also, Long John Silver commited a few acts of piracy and he lost his leg.

Nirth: Modern criminals sure are getting smarter but they don't seem to be getting any wiser.

keeveek: Nope, people using computers are getting dumber. This virus is occuring everywhere in the world.

An average person should be aware that the Police wouldn't ask you for any money online...
What episode? Could you look it up?

And yes, they should be aware but they use the police as fear and it's very effective. Of course impersonating law enforcement probably sets off a few beacons here and there probably gets them caught sooner than later. :P

I got that one once. I was completely unprepared for it. That little monster took forever to get off my system. I remember I had to create a separate account with administrator privileges just to mess around with system files.

Just remember when you see these things, the FBI won't extort you and let you off the hook. If they nab you, they'll beat your face into the pavement, and THEN extort you after giving you a criminal record.

tinyE: Has anyone seen this!? It attacked me last night while I was in here, though I'm sure I picked it up on one of the "dispresputable" sites I visit. What scared me is yesterday morning, in this forum, I joked about pirating and while I tried to make it clear I was only joking, I thought for a sec the Feds had no sense of humor and had actually siezed me computer! Turns out it is just a really nast malware virus. SOB locked up my system and it took me hours just to get back to a previous config so I could get in and root it out. I think I got it. I hope I got it. Please god, tell me I got it.

SO anyway I have to re-download all the groovy stuff I've bought here in the past four days but if thats the worst of it, I'll live. I only posted about it to warn everyone to stay clear of me as I seem to be under surveillance and I don't want to take any of you down with me. Ha!
Im not that scared, those things would be in direct opposition to the law here, and I wouldn't be the 1 in trouble if such a thing was to occur :)
If the police ever catches you with such stuff, nobody informs you about it. They come directly to you and take your media.
Note: If someone is there pretending to be of the police, you should immediately call the police emergency line or if you have the number a nearby police station to ask if it really is the police.
At least in Germany this is what is told against fraud, maybe in other countries the laws about it are different.

It was a joke :P I'm never serious about piracy :P

It's a felony in Poland ;-) Not to mention scamming, computer hacking, etc.

It's at least 3 crimes in one ! :D

I always wondered, did a person made a book, film, album, game that has not been copyright protected?
Probably. Copyright hasn't been around as long as books, after all.

For instance, I doubt the books of the Bible were copyrighted (at least in their original format, though translations tend to be to at least an extent).

Books were copied by monks without any copyrights whatsoever :P Manual xerox.

my friend got that virus...if you look closely they misspelled a couple words in the warning lol. ..but also yeah it was hard to kill

it wanted you to open a moneybook or greendot or bitcoin account to pay some sort of fine/bribe to get it unlocked right? fbi doesn't usually do that(they have the courts do it instead)

Weird. They mispelled a few words but they were smart enough to offer a bitcoin address. If they use money laundering services along with internet anonomity services it makes it virtually impossible for FBI to track the money transfers.
Yeah, that flavor of ransom-ware has been popular for a while now. Regarding your system, if you use that system to make online purchases, log into banking or CC accounts, or anything along those lines, just do a full wipe and reinstall. A lot of malware has become fairly sophisticated these days, and it can be very difficult to get all of it. A full reinstall can be a bit of a pain, but dealing with a stolen CC, identity theft, or having your accounts of financial websites being compromised is a much, much larger pain.
