First, you must know that I am typing this from a separate laptop than the computer I am referring to in the post.
I typed a paper on another computer due tomorrow (instead of a final, we have a paper due, so you understand why this is important). I finished typing the paper yesterday and I tried to print out the paper, however I discovered that my mouse, the only one in the house compatible with the computer, is completely broken. It is too late for me to go out and buy a new one, and I have to get the paper printed.
Does anyone know if there is a way that I can use file sharing or another way to control the cursor without a mouse so that I can print the paper? If you do, you will have saved my World Civ grade, and I will be most thankful.
Thanks for any help.
you should have access to remote desktop features in windows XP and vista.
in Vista I believe it's called "Remote Desktop Connection" under accessories.
You have to set up remote desktop though. Its also only available in XP Pro, Vista Business & Vista Ultimate
Keyboard commands are the fastest and easiest. Assuming you're using windows CTRL+P brings up the print dialogue in virtually every printer capable program ever made, the TAB key moves between tabs, fields and buttons and SPACE acts as left clicking the button

Thanks a lot for the help, I tried using remote access and used the keyboard commands to enable it on my desktop, but I keep getting the error:
"This computer can't connect to the remote computer.
Try connecting again, if the error continues, contact the owner of the remote computer or the network administrator."

Why not use the keyboard commands to print the paper? rather then use the keyboard commands to setup a remote computer to use the other computer to control the cursor the print the paper?
I already got the paper to print with keyboard commands once he gave me the idea.
Now I am just curious about how this program works, and why it won't let me connect to the other computer.

Remote control not being enabled, maybe? Which Windows version is running on the computer you wish to control?
If XP: right-click on "My Computer" and chose "properties". There you'll (among other things) find a tab named "Remote", in there you should check the box "Allow users to connect remotely to this computer", and then "Select remote users". Add yourself to the list (click add, type your username, click "check names" to complete the names with the computer name, click OK, OK)
If 7 (I assume Vista is similar): Right-click "Computer", chose properties, click "Advanced System Settings", and from there on you'll recognise the process from XP.

Both computers are vista, and both have it enabled.

I think your router's firewall might be blocking it.
are both the computers on the same network?
they might both be in the same router, but that doesn't mean they're on the same "network"
Sounds like either a network or permissions issue. If you can ping the computer then the network is fine (yes its a broad and inaccurate generalisation but its usually true). The one thing you have to remember is that you're effectively logging onto the target computer as a registered user. In order to do it you need a password protected account on the target machine, thats where a lot of people have issues.
Works a treat when it's set up though, my old clunky download computer is now a headless system with nothing but a power and ethernet cable plugged in
