Iain: Patches :

1.06

http://www.shacknews.com/file/2006/heretic-2-106-enhancement-pack

1.07

http://forums.raven-games.com/showthread.php?t=34374

Have to be installed in correct order

Zackensacks Glide Wrapper :

http://www.zeckensack.de/glide/

nGlide :

http://www.zeus-software.com/downloads/nglide

I believe GOG are using nGlide on the games that support 3DFX now so may be worth trying it out first, Glide looks much better than D3D on Heretic 2
thanks for this!! +1
Cool, I'm still waiting for getting it here or on steam or so, although that will probably never happen. I imagine that there is probavbly a rights problem, with Raven being owned by Activision and id by Zenimax.
I always wanted to get Heretic II, I played the demo to death back in the day. But while it were in stores I was too young to be able to buy it, and I never had money back in the day.
I played through Heretic 2 recently, still quite fun. Animations and effects have held up pretty well.
Multiplayer is fun in a chaotic/random kind of way.

Iain: I really enjoyed Heretic 2

hunvagy: Or you could use Hammer of Tyrion: http://uhexen2.sourceforge.net/ Oh and Hexen 2 is a modifier Quake 1 engine, not Quake 2.
:P
Thanks for the link, might use that next time I play Hexen 2.

xxxIndyxxx: Yihaaa, i finally have Heretic II. I got tired waiting for it to appear here and by chance i came across it in a gamestore that also has a nice selection of new and used retro games!

I hope it is a good as people say it is. I know it's not the same as heretic 1 but i don't really care as long as it is a fun game? What do you guys think about it?

Edit: I would be hilarious if gog would release it this week...
Is it the 3rd person view game where you wield a staff? EDIT: Yes it is.

I felt it was ok... until I faced the first boss. I felt that boss fight was stupid, or then I was missing something. It seemed I was just locked into a small room with a levitating boss, and somehow tried to fight him while he kept shooting at me, with very little room to move around to avoid his shots. Or something. I felt disgusted and stopped playing at that point. I guess I could retry it at some point, after all I've survived some other similarly stupid boss fights later, like in XIII.

_Bruce_: Fortunately for me I have the Loki Linux port version. Haven't tried to get it work lately, but it is probably easier than this.

Iain: Its pretty easy to get running, just a bit of a chew in all fairness, same goes for other old disc games from that era.

Patch it up, then before starting use either nGlide of the other wrapper and configure resolution and effects etc then start the game, do your settings and away you go. Its just tinkering to get stuff the way you want it.
I got it to run but seem to be unable to play in anything other then software mode. Maybe i am doing something wrong with the nglide thing. 3dfx seems to work but only in a small portion of the screen (even after selecting fit to screen in nglide program)

also when i do not run it in sofware mode i don't get any text ingame (tutorial messages, mission messages,...)

I don't get why these games are on Steam but not on GOG.

I have never used nglide in all honesty, I used the other wrapper I linked to, really easy to configure and set to 3DFX ingame and it worked fine from there. After doing the settings with the program you minimise it, don't close it or it won't work. That's all I can suggest at the minute as I cannot set it up myself as the disk is somewhere in one of the many boxes that are packed ready for our house move next Monday.

I think I know which box it is in and if I get a chance some point later today will see if I can dig it out and set it up using the other wrapper. I can't 100% promise though I hope you understand, everything is in turmoil presently!

In regards to Heretic II, it is not... AFAIK it is not sold digital anywhere.

Apogee / 3D Realms are here, but not the other iD related titles under different publishers. For the other franchises, it is ZeniMax Media who now controls the IP's.

edit: little sidenote- by many definitions ZeniMax is Indie, as it is privately held :)

Yeah i feel stupid now.... I didn't realise i had to keep the program running.... I am an idiot with these kind of things. Will try it now. Changing the resolution ingame helped a lot actually. It started to look really good (did it somehow change the rendering while changing the resolution??) and i kept having tekst. Will try to use to glide wrapper as intended now.

strangly enough it didn't make any difference compare to changing the resolution. This looks way t0o good to be software mode I think. maybe that's because of the patches?? I can't choose a glide renderer in the game menu though it reverst back to software mode. Like before when using 3dfx it only plays within a small portion of the screen (fullscreen on) but to be honest it looks identical as far as i can see to software mode high res. ( this is all with the nglide program running.)
Okay final update before i run out of time. I will play tomorrow. I crashes when starting a new game...after the intro. Fixed that will loading the first map in the console and the starting a new game.

One more issue: the cd music doesn't loop. Does anybody know how to fix that in older games because i know a lot of them have this issue. Blood had it too for instance.

Try adding the games exe to DEP, it may be stopping something from running, you can also add whichever Glide Wrapper you are using to DEP.

To do this (Vista & Windows 7) :

Control Panel > System > Advanced System Settings > Settings (Performace at top under Advanced tab) > Data Execution Prevention tab

Select second DEP option (bottom one)

Then at bottom of Window click add and locate the games exe file, if there's more then one repeat process to add extra files (could be a launcher and also the exe file). After adding the files to it click Apply at bottom and try again.

Same goes for Divine and Beyond Divinity, movies don't play if the game isn't added to this.

no that didn't do it. Oh well: it looks good, it runs fine (i know how to get around the new game crash) and if i want to have music i just save and reload and the music track plays again. Just wish that i could find a way to let the music loop.
