Try meet up! There are a bunch of different groups doing different activities - you're bound to find something that appeals ;-)

langurmonkey: What are some fun hobbies that can help you make friends? Hobbies that are social, the opposite of gaming, basically.
Magic tricks, maybe? Learn a few tricks that use everyday common objects (rubber bands, straws, etc.).

tinyE: Join the army. You get meet all sorts of interesting people. And then kill them.

This is relevant...
It's definitely harder as you get older, but if you enjoy gaming best bet is to not shirk it entirely and just try to find people with similar interests locally. If they're people with vastly different interests then it's going to end up exhausting hanging around them anyway, or at least from my experience that's how it's always ended up being.

Edit: or if you also want to hook up with the ladies, I hear salsa classes are fun.

Stalking is a fun and inexpensive "social" hobby. The only downside is that the people you stalk don't know that you are friends with them.
There's always going to bars. However, those of us in our forties or above are referred to as the creepy old guy.

tinyE: Seriously. My town has 44 people in it. The only way to make new friends would be to take up cloning. Is that a hobby?
It is to me!

44 people? Do you live in someplace like Frog Jump, TN?

copper harbor Michigan

I think it's 44 people.
The township might be closer to 80 and we've had a few births the last couple of years.

Oh wow! You're way in the Upper. I think you may technically be Canadian for about three months out of the year due to wind patterns.

Ive never understood the fascination for bars. Yes for those who drink or smoke or like to dance (if bar has that option) great. The rest of us who are in 40's?. Bit a mystery to be honest. And something i do ask friends now and then.Never get a conclusive answer ;)

Well I am sure, but not because I live here. Everyone up here is fine, but down in St Louis Mo where I was born we're all fucked up.

Not that I'm complaining but I made a silly comment about where I live and now the thread had become about my gene pool. How did that happen?
All jokes aside, the pottery class idea is a good one.

I'll add in swing dancing. If you can find a place that hosts a swing dance, chances are that there is a 30 or 40 minute group lesson at the beginning of the night. There are always tons of total beginners, and the more advanced people who join in are not going to be put off by a beginner, because nobody is obligated to take the lesson.

It's fun. I've been doing it for years. You can meet a lot of interesting people with off-the-beaten-track tastes.

Cheers!
Enroll in a class not a part of a bachelor-degree curriculum. It could be sculpting, painting, photography, learning a musical instrument, screenwriting, a new language. Something to do with the arts with other creative, passionate people, that encourages participation and feedback with one another. It doesn't need to be something offered through a university either.

Join a weekly bicycling meet-up or a tennis class or something similarly outgoing and sporty. Physical group activity will also be a boost in endorphins, basically nature's anti-depressant. If you keep it up long enough your health will improve too.

Try perusing local alternative newsweeklies and such looking for interesting stuff going around town to attend. Street fairs or art gallery stroll nights are simple examples. Also outdoor concerts.

Good luck and don't get discouraged, or crawl back into a cave of introverted self-loathing. Be as open-minded as possible, otherwise you won't be open to real change.
