qre3o: What do you guys think of "Heart of Darkness" as a book?
Frankly, I don't think it'd work that well. Ok, so the guy lost a dog to black monsters he has to shoot with a ray gun, but... come on, a whole book of that?

There's a graphic novel adaptation of it that looks pretty innaresting. Can't remember the publisher, but they've also published graphic novels of the Picture of Dorian Gray and Crime & Punishment.

The book is pretty short

DaCostaBR: The ideas and themes were interesting but the writing didn't appeal to me.

My biggest beef with it were the two first person narrators, you have one person narrating in first person about another telling a story, also in first person. A couple of times when I was puzzled about something I'd re-read the passage and realize that it had sneakily changed narrators half-way through the paragraph.

But like I said, the themes were interesting and it did a good job building up Kurtz's character as well as Marlow's meeting with him.
I agree with you it hasn't aged well.

It's not based on the book's themes, but Paradox recently announced an expansion for VIctoria 2,focusing on the setting. (It's called "Heart of Darkness," even.) Pride of Nations got a similar one a few months back as well.
I read Heart of Darkness around 10 years ago in high school and I thought it was excellent. The story is laden with meaning - even the title itself has multiple meanings - I enjoyed the themes very much. Of course, I was only a teenager back then, so maybe my tastes have changed
