It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera

They're actually close to releasing 64-bit compatibility for more games! Right now, only the Classic Pack is 64-bit compatible. I've been angry at the service before, but now they seem to be stepping up their game, and if all turns out well, I'll gladly upgrade to the Gold Pack. Right now, I just have the Classic Pack, which is great for playing arcade, Genesis and Dreamcast games, but I would love to go back to playing their other titles like I used to when I was on 32-bit.
I can see it now..."GameTap Still Has Shitty Web Interface".

Yeah, I really miss the player. I hope they bring that back, or make a new, better one.
What were they thinking went they moved to a web platform?

Metaboli bought GameTap a while back, and Metaboli uses a very similar plugin-based system. It's quite likely that they decided to ditch the Player so they could eventually fuse the two services together (if only in terms of the backend).
I certainly don't think it could have been to save upkeep costs because the way it is now they will need to update the plugin every time a new browser version has significant changes, whereas the Player existed independent of everything.

You can also see Metaboli's influence from the fact that GameTap also offers a digital store to buy new games. One thing I don't understand is why they haven't brought in some of Metaboli's key titles to the service, and why Metaboli has had 64-bit versions of most of their games for some time now, and GameTap is only getting started in that sector.
so how does the new web interface work? I can't remember my login details to try it out.
Say, for example, I wanted to play Project Eden, Commandos 3 or Psychonauts... do i need some kind of web plug in? Or do i need to keep the browser open? What's going on???
Is there a catch to their free package at all? Aside from the crap 64bit compatibility, that is.

IIRC, there is a video ad that you have to watch every time you boot up a game. I played it ~2 years ago, so I might be wrong / it might have changed.

The kind of thing that Gamespot expects you to watch just to see one of their videos, you mean? Well, for a full game, I can live with that. It's not like games don't throw in a few ads when loading anyway.

Yeah, that's how it was when I was there. It wasn't that bad, you just had to wait ~30 seconds (the length of the video) for it to start.

Other than the fact that they're constantly adding and removing games? No catch I'm aware of.

Weren't their games also unmoddable so no unnofficial patches, high resolution patches, mods etc. can be used with their games?

That too, but I thought it was pretty obvious. It's a free pack, though, so that's something.
Cool, lemme know when they actually implement 100% compatibility and I might start paying them again.
