Damn."is a film series that serves as a reimagining of Masamune Shirow's Ghost in the Shell. The films, a four-part series, feature new character designs and is directed by Kazuchika Kise, screenplay by Tow Ubukata, and music by Cornelius."

Bugger
WHy did they do this ? :(

The Major looks different with the hair... I'm afraid t'will be crap
It's kinda half reboot half prequel, they changed Motoko's past.

nijuu: Wasnt aware of it. Is it a 3rd season or brand new from scratch?
It's an OVA, don't think it has anything to do with SAC
I need to read the manga of Arise to fully understand this series I guess.

She kinda reminds me of Raven from the Teen Titans 2003 TV Show.
I first read that "Ghost in the Shell - Arse" and was severely disappointed when checking if I'd got that correctly.

i'm with you on this one.
First time hearing about this . Will check it out. Still haven't read the second volume of comics nor I've seen Innocence. Gotta catch up

EDIT: I hate the new design of Major

Eh, the major's new design isn't that bad. At least her outfit is a lot less ridiculous than in S.A.C.

The only visual redesign I can't stand is Saito's. If it wasn't for the eye, I wouldn't even have recognized him.

As for the show itself, it's more Ghost in the Shell. If you've enjoyed Ghost in the Shell before, you should be able to enjoy that one. Minus Microsoft's product placement.

The plot is still just as hard to follow, it still explores the same themes and it still opens up with a nice view of the cityscape with helicopters flying by.

Despite people not liking the new animation style, episode 1 of Arise has kept to the core of what Ghost in the Shell was all about. I like the episode quite a bit and the animation style does not bother me at all. People just wish for the Stand Alone Complex design because the show ran for 2 series so that is understandable. However if you look at the movies and loved them they had their own animation style that not many complained about. So I look at the animation style of Arise with that same regard.
My default approach before seeing 1st episode was "this is re-boot, so this MUST be MEH"
After watching this I think it's not THAT bad.
Different art style, not exactly my taste, but still well done: dark, gloomy and futuristic.
Nice animations. Not hand-drawn, but you can see that lot of attentions to details was involved, so it's not "render f*.* everything with same settings and dump it into movie" approach. I kinda like it.
Music at least as good as in GitS or SAC.
Plot seems to be a bit chaotic and fragmented in my opinion, but hey - this is just first episode, and to be honest plot in previous movies were not very clear at the beginning either.
Bottom line is, while I was not amazed (like with GitS), I also do not feel that time spend watching this was time wasted. If they do not screw up the remainig episodes, it will be a solid product.
I totally forgot about this new OVA. I must check this out ASAP :)
