(never mind)

on a completely separate note, i just bought and installed Fallout (my first purchase here) and to be completely honest with you, i'm doing everything i can to put off getting started. have read all the forum stuff, and suppose i'll start creating a new, improved character. (actually went out and fought some rats for awhile, but that battle system is definitely gonna take some learning -- i hear it grows on you). Cheers.

stevef: hey i'm posting this here 'cause you folks are the most tech-savvy brutes i've ever come across. DSquall, a mod over at alderlea, has created his own rpg game and he's got a glitch that he can't solve -- every now and then the player gets a message saying the computer is pausing to refresh memory, and if the player doesn't handle it properly, the whole save file is lost and you gotta start over again (the game is miniscule by gog standards).

here's the link:

see what you think. i'm in no position to say, but i think it's pretty good for a freshman effort -- i can't even imagine the work that must go into creating a game.

Holy crap, Fallout is amazing. It's short too, there's no reason to not just play with whatever you want, because you can always come back and play again. Just make some savage brute that can wield a minigun and Power Armor (high Str and high Agi for action points). You can even lower your Int to like 2 or 3 and get the moronic dialog options.

Again it's short, no reason to make "the perfect character" because after playing it once you can probably replay it in 10 hours or so.
yeah, yeah, but you know how it is, learning a whole new system.
character-wise, i've read everything from tagging w/ Bloody Mess/Chemical Resistance to Fast Shot/Skilled to Gift/Finesse, and the way you choose changes the whole game (even heard from a guy who stole everything in sight and PLANTED incendiarys with "steal," and won the game THAT way.
i like the idea of multiple scenarios, i guess it's like jumping into cold water -- oh shit, here goes. plus i've heard tales of losing arms and legs from the Glow, or being cut in half vertically -- i could probably live without that (sounds kinda funny though -- wonder how that looks).

I played it the first time without knowing jack crap about it. I loved it anyway. Don't sweat having to be perfect on this one. Fallout was the first western RPG we'd had in a long time when it hit the street, it's pretty accessible. You can even half ass your way through Fallout 3, you don't have to get all that much perfect to do just fine.
For your first playthrough, I suggest you limit yourself to "standard" characters, with average stats with enhanced agility, perception and intelligence. Choose small weapons and such "safe" skills and make an effort to get accustomed to the battle system. It's a bit difficult at the very start, but when you get a level or two under your belt things get a lot clearer quite quickly. And don't be afraid of making mistakes, as long as you save every so often. And most of all, have fun no matter how you play the game.
