I tried thinking about great old soundtracks made in the west but couldn't come up with any, figured it's because a lot of western developers at the time were focusing on PC and I only got into PC gaming recently. Also, despite the generous offer of soundtracks with the games here in GOG, I never sat down to listen to any.

So, do you have any good songs to show me?
The Necropolis theme from HOMM3 is my favorite:

The Neverhood has one of the most original and amazing soundtracks ever.
Also - Ozar Midrashim from Soul Reaver is awesome:

This not old but I listened it when I had like a half a month armwrestle about it.. So Far Cry 3 soundtrack.
It's pretty good.

Nevertheless bloodraynes menu theme is pretty great. Well, Baldur's gates 2 is better.

Infact.. Torment's menu theme is much better than those others put together. ^^
I may be missreading the intent of the thread.
I always loved the Diablo 2 theme and I really dig Sanitarium, the music from the game and the song from Metallica which was actually one of the 1st songs I ever learned on guitar and that is only a few light years off topic. :)

99% of all music I turn off especially for FPS.
Mechwarrior 2. You can thank me later.
Nothing beats Doom

Do note that there is a difference in how the soundtracks of many older PC games are used compared to that of the older console titles. In many ways they are more similar to the modern game soundtracks in that they try to set the mood, but don't aim to be as catchy or memorable. A good soundtrack (for setting the mood) should not be one you actively think about when hearing it.

As for great soundtracks, have you heard the one from Chaos Gate?

Other notable and memorable songs from PC games include
Baba Yetu (Civ 4)

Stones (Ultima)

Hell March (Red Alert)

A new Day Begins (Republic: The Revolution)

Pride or Pain (Knights of Honor)

The Traveler (Crusader: No Remorse)

By the way, notice the huge jump in quality between the early & mid 90's games.
Divine Divinity's was rather enjoyable.

I'll throw in a mention for HOMM2's Sea theme.

Soothing, sublime, and excellent.

Also, Dark Sun: Wake of the Ravager's redbook CD audio had some winners. Here's the title song for starters:

Loom and Monkey Island (again, cd audio versions rather than midi) also come to mind.
