Ok so im a huge gothic fan but actually didn't play the third game before today. installed with latest version of fan patch and started it up with huge expectations. I got shocked with what I saw. After a looong loading time the game starts and BAM killing orcs (laggy graphics) with a HORRIBLE fighting system! After the sad start things are not getting better with worse dialouge than ever and unclear goals and just basic sillines all around. Are there any reasons to continue playing this game) Love the first two but this seems worse in every single way. I mean - what is the point whith a gothic game if I can kill three orcs simultaneosuly right of from the start?
Sorry but have you been in coma the last decade lol 'Gothic 3 sucks' is common knowledge.

Yes sadly it is. When I bought G2 the GOG downloader actually sent me a PM telling me "That's all you need."
Gothic 3 was quite disappointing.

Please don't buy Gothic 4. It is dire.

edit: I bought 4 when it came out. The few reviews were somewhat negative, but I figured that there were people who didn't enjoy Gothic 1 and 2, which were magnificent. As it turns out, the reviews were not negative enough. I am still angry, years later.

Cmon it's not that bad :). The 1:75 patch fixes a huge amount of stuff, and makes the game quite good actually. And for killing 3 orcs at the start... well, our hero should be quite strong now after the endless grind of the second game! You could also play with the difficulty slider, and have Alternative Balancing/AI checked... makes the game harder for a while.

Dialogue has never been the strong point of the Gothic series regardless.

The way the game starts was quite badly thought out, but when you finish the fight (and finish stealing all the stuff), you can play around with all the graphic options, and eventually it will be smooth enough. Hell, it was smooth on my older crappy computer back in 2009.

Anyway, give it a chance, might surprise you :).

I don't think it won any awards OP. :D
I suppose that I'm one of about five people who likes Gothic 3 more than than the previous games, however I have no problem admitting that it's not a perfect game.

I'll address some of your points...

1: The game does lag and stutter, a lot. There are no loading screens in the world and the world itself is pretty large, hence the lagging. With the community patch it does lag a lot less, and in some areas it doesn't lag at all, but some places will always lag and stutter, unfortunately

2: I prefer Gothic 3's control system. You could say that it's been simplified, but I like it a lot more than the previous games controls, which I found to be...clunky, to put it politely.

3: I don't think you can say any of the Gothic games (or the first Risen, haven't played the second) have good dialogue, or a good story for that matter, and to me Gothic 3's dialogue is no better or worse than the other games in the series. I'll agree that the dialogue can be pretty bad and silly, but like I said, that seems to be the general rule in this series.

4: The main goal in the beginning is made pretty clear, you need to find Xardas, I think if you talk to Milton after the tutorial Nameless Hero outright says he needs to find Xardas.

5: The Orcs in the tutorial are weaker than the normal Orcs because, well, it's the tutorial. The game does have some difficulty flaws (like getting stun locked) and some things that don't make sense like a Warg taking on an entire bandit camp and winning.

Admittedly it's probably just a difference in taste, but I really do prefer Gothic 3 to Gothic/Gothic 2/Risen and it's not even close. If you want to give Gothic 3 another chance, be sure to use the latest community patch. But hey, if you don't like it then move on to the next game, considering the reviews of Gothic 3 and how people in this very thread are talking about it, you're probably not missing much if you already don't like it.

This would make a nice "I must be the only one on the planet that loves this game" thread because WE ALL HAVE THEM! :D
No it doesn't, you just have to get into the game, and the music is amazing:)

The music in Gothic 3 IS amazing, I especially like Nordmar's theme(s).
IN my opinion Gothic 3 is fine, not es good as the first two but still ok... as long as you don't buy and install the addon, that was horrible :D
And I don't know if a lot is lost in the translation but I liked the dialoges and everything, they were often funny (german).
Gothic 3 wasn't that great, no.

Risen is very good.

I reckon the dialogue and gritty characters in the first two Gothics and Risen are brilliant. I can name and happily quote many of them, from the whispering women near the Khorinis harbor to Vatras' shouted story of the Gods to the nameless bandit that tries to con you into entering a cave. Chatting away to them is one of the best parts of the game, on par with the stellar map design.

As for Gothic 3, I've played it through twice, after many false starts. The game has grown on me, slowly. But I can't remember the denizens and I can't remember what they had to say. They don't compare.

Still, my happiness with the early Gothics and Risen could just mean that I'm easily charmed!

Oh yeah the overall atmosphere and characters in the Gothic/Risen games are pretty great and I'll agree that Gothic 3 doesn't have many memorable characters, especially compared to the previous games. The most memorable NPC in Gothic 3 for me is the Warg who helped me against a bandit camp and who helped with getting Gotha. Oh, and that Orc Shaman in Silden. The Nordmarians as a whole were somewhat memorable, if only because they were the only people who were always ready to stand up to the Orcs, even more so than the rebels of Myrtana.

As a whole though, yeah the characters were entirely forgettable, I honestly can't remember the names of any of the characters that were introduced in Gothic 3.
