It isn't actually all that difficult. The forum doesn't really mangle the quotes, the posters do. Here's what it should have looked like with correct editing:

Hehe, okay, so it seems I have to retract my previous statement. The forum does in fact mangle the quotes. The tags were correct for that edit, but it still threw my final comment into Lou's quote. Go figure.
