I am thinking about purchasing some of the old games (Might & Magic, specifically) and am running Windows 7. How exactly do you get the game - do you download it, is it streamed from the site, or is the game mailed via a disk? I am concerned about the old games working on my system and I do not want to make any major changes to my system to accommodate the games. Would appreciate any info on this subject, thanks :)

You can simply download them, either via the downloader or without, your choice.
It's a simple setup file that contains Dosbox, which makes sure that the game just runs fine.

You won't need to change anything.
You download it from the website. If you click "My Account" at the top of the website you should see some free games you can try.

You buy, and then you download the game installer either through your browser or with help of the GOG-Downloader. Simply install and run. All the old games are set up ready with i.e. a working DOSbox.
If you do have problems running a game (rare, but it happens) you can look in the game specific forums or contact support. If you can get a game to run at all, even with support's help, you get your money back.

Simple, no?

PS: Beware the ninjas ;-)

You download the games. And they come already "adjusted" to run on newer systems. For example, one needs to run DOSBOX to run old Dos games. However, all that work is done for you. When you download a game from gog, all you do is install in and click on the icon, it does the rest (opens up DOSBOX, and starts the game).

Sometimes there are minor adjustments that are necessary (for most users it runs as is) and sometimes there are minor adjustments that some people prefer (for example selecting the quality of sound in DOSBOX games, but most of the time they work as is, with a simple click.

There is also a 30 day guarantee that if your game doesn't work on your system, and support can't help you get it to work, you will receive a refund.

You download an installer from GOG which then installs the game on your computer. Every game has its system requirements listed on the game page. Here's the Might & Magic game page, for example:

http://www.gog.com/game/might_and_magic_6_limited_edition

compatible with Windows (XP, Vista, 7, 8)

Minimum system requirements: Windows XP or Windows Vista, 1.8 GHz Processor, 512MB RAM (1 GB recommended), 3D graphics card compatible with DirectX 7 (compatible with DirectX 9 recommended), 4GB HDD, CD/DVD drive (or drive emulation utility), Mouse, Keyboard.
I'm curious how many people answered at once and ninja'd each other. Awesome community :-).
No one really knows... It's MAGIC !

As others said, you download the game from the website or using the downloader. You also get the bonus materials. Might and Magics come with a lot. Most have soundtracks (MP3 and most have FLAC file formats), manuals and reference cards. There's a map or two in there, too.

I've had them all working on my Windows 7 machine. But if you have problems, contact support. If they can't get it working, you can have your money back.

I suggest checking the GOG game subforums, and searching for your OS in those forums to see if people have had problem running these games on systems similar to yours.
You are supposed to have a bunch of free games at your disposition, try them before making any purchase.

Seems like the best post so far.

Tyrian 2000 uses DosBox I believe, play that for a while, it's free. You'll then have gone through the whole process and tried out an old game on your modern system and see how it plays.

There's also 1-2 ultima games you can give a try. Ultima worlds of adventure pt 2 and Ultima 4 - quest of the avatar
