PowerMonger was awesome, had both the PC and Genesis versions. Probably put over a hundred hours into it.
Some tips:
Set your stance to "passive" (one sword) to visit villages and turn them to your side.
Set one of the villages for research.
Send your armies one by one to that village to get the new weapons.
Find road choke points, place your troops on high ground overlooking said choke points. (there's usually a hill or something nearby and the higher ground gives them an advantage)
Don't leave a choke point unattended, the enemy usually moves using the roads, so when you send an army to rearm with new weapons, rotate guard duty with whoever just got upgraded.
Once you are ready, assemble all the villagers you can into a mob, send them in first (aggressive stance) as cannon fodder. Your troops should be following close behind, ready to mop up surviving enemy soldiers.
If you are using multiple generals, keep in mind that any order that you give them will take a while to reach them, check the carrier pigeon icon on top of the screen.
Keep in mind the weather, moving your troops during a blizzard will kill a number of your soldiers. You can also pull a Russian and use the weather to your advantage: hole up during winter, let the enemy suffer losses and then counter-attack when he is weak, don't be afraid to trade territory for time.
Writing all that reminded me of how deep Powermonger was, it had more depth than a lot of modern strategy games. We already have Bullfrog in here, i hope that we get this game someday.
