It's strange. I remember reading a quote from Peter Molyneax about dungeon keeper, in which he said "I thought PowerMonger was shit, we spent 2 weeks on that, we've spent X times that on Dungeon Keeper".

Can't fine the quote though.
Is there anywhere to get this that isn't eBay? Obscure methods of play and strategy game sounds like my kind of game. :P
I love the way that as people aged their health actually deteriorated in the game, made the game world feel real back in the day.

Also I realize that those soldiers are away from their wives 'n' all but sheep shagging in a game is just unnecessary IMO.

Personally I can hardly believe that that's a real quote (and it's impossible they spent so little time working on it, considering that it had a real-time 3D engine, NPCs with individual AI etc.).

F4LL0UT: Great game but hard to figure out. I also got it from the bundle CD that contained both Populous 2 and this one. You really have to read the manual to fully understand how it works but once you get it it's an awesome game (and I think the manual can be found on the CD). Sadly I was unable to find a DOS version of the expansion pack which changes the setting to a WWI scenario with rifles and tanks.

What amazes me to this day is the love for detail and how advanced the technology was.
Sadly the manual is in French. I guess I could find a PDF of it somewhere.

Ever tried replacementdocs.com? Has a vast collection of old manuals.

Edit: I even edited a hyperlink into my post so you can simply click on it. I'm a nice guy, ain't I?

Yeah I doubt anything about this game was "Off the shelf" really. The quote has probably been taken out of context, like so many things on the internet.
PowerMonger was awesome, had both the PC and Genesis versions. Probably put over a hundred hours into it.

Some tips:

Set your stance to "passive" (one sword) to visit villages and turn them to your side.

Set one of the villages for research.

Send your armies one by one to that village to get the new weapons.

Find road choke points, place your troops on high ground overlooking said choke points. (there's usually a hill or something nearby and the higher ground gives them an advantage)

Don't leave a choke point unattended, the enemy usually moves using the roads, so when you send an army to rearm with new weapons, rotate guard duty with whoever just got upgraded.

Once you are ready, assemble all the villagers you can into a mob, send them in first (aggressive stance) as cannon fodder. Your troops should be following close behind, ready to mop up surviving enemy soldiers.

If you are using multiple generals, keep in mind that any order that you give them will take a while to reach them, check the carrier pigeon icon on top of the screen.

Keep in mind the weather, moving your troops during a blizzard will kill a number of your soldiers. You can also pull a Russian and use the weather to your advantage: hole up during winter, let the enemy suffer losses and then counter-attack when he is weak, don't be afraid to trade territory for time.

Writing all that reminded me of how deep Powermonger was, it had more depth than a lot of modern strategy games. We already have Bullfrog in here, i hope that we get this game someday.

The quote is from memory, so I may have got timescales wrong, but it was not taken out of context. It was in PC Format, during one of the many interviews he did about Dungeon Keeper. Trouble is that it took so long for that game to come out that it leaves a lot of possible issues it could be in. Also PC format have no accessible online archive (I expect my physical copy has been destroyed by now).

I suspect he was just enthusiastic about the new baby, and went too far, but the reason it sticks in my memory is precisely because it was so surprising. Unfortunately I cannot find anything online except one other person also mentioning that they remember the quote.
How did this topic pass me by,

Powermonger is my favourite game. Played it on Amiga and PC.

I never did manage to complete it. Got to the last row of islands on the bottom of the map though.

I still have a copy of it on a CD with Populous.

Wish I could get it to run on Win7 64 but i haven't a clue how to configure Dosbox (so I will keep nagging here until its released!)

Lets get some more votes for it...

Ha! Sounds as though you're like me in that you had to complete every single island even though the game didn't demand it :)
