I've started writing a series of articles about games - a sort of column or editorial, with a related-but-different theme every couple of weeks. It's a bit of fun for me, really, but I genuinely think that some of the content of the articles is pretty interesting. I've attracted a few hits through friends and a couple of targeted forum posts, but I'm looking to try and generate more interest.

Does anyone have any advice about how to promote my work? It turns out that self-promotion is something I really hate. I've posted a few links through social media, but I always feel like I'm nagging at people, so I don't like to repost content - or even post too many articles too quickly. I've hit a few forums too, trying to get attention, but it always leaves a bitter taste for me.

Does the GOG forum have an official/unofficial policy on promotional posts? I say "promotional" - it would be nice to generate discussion and feedback on the articles, and a forum is an ideal place to do that. Still, the nature of the best is the same, and I don't want to post any links or plugs if it's against the spirit of the community.

Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers!

Just go to the Off Topic forum section of games that you write about and ask people to check out your articles, much like you did here, I see youtube reviewers do it all the time, eg nukemdukem on the Grim Dawn forum, or UltimateChance (the whitey show) on Gamefaqs.

If you can afford it, do a weekly promotional giveaway, that'd probably be efficient. We had another reviewer who used to do just that .

Exactly this - I did a GA to promo my sketchblog (and get feedback), generated over 1200 hits in 48 hours, with return visitors / subscribers and a slight increase in general traffic.

Also, discussing topics (and sneaking in links) with other writers / bloggers / fans on twitter (much as I hate it) can be quite productive

The promo idea is interesting - but don't I have the same problem there? I need to tell people about the promotion so that they can see it. So are we talking about doing stuff like posting threads called "FREE MONEY IF YOU CLICK THIS LINK" on any gaming forum I can find? I hate all that stuff. Or will a promo manage to advertise itself?

Just do a thread, announce what the prize is, then post a link to your most interesting articles. People will look just out of curiosity, if nothing else.

As above, but I'd reckon you'd be better to ask questions about the content on your blog / articles instead. for instance;

"what did I say about (insert game title here) in my piece on (insert industry topic here)? LINK"

or even get them to discuss such a point in thread - but give them some reason to visit the link.
