Dolphins should be treated as non-human "persons", with their rights to life and liberty respected, scientists meeting in Canada have been told.
A person needs to be an individual. If individuals count, then the deliberate killing of individuals of this sort is ethically the equivalent of deliberately killing a human being.
The move was made at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in Vancouver, Canada, the world's biggest science conference.
It is based on years of research that has shown dolphins and whales have large, complex brains and a human-like level of self-awareness.

This is rich, thanks for sharing!
Does that mean I have to stop eating marinated dolphin?
I'm feeling kinda "-_-" about this, but certain humane rights aren't terrible idea. That aside, equal rights for all animals is totally absurd. Ants will continue to get accidentally stepped upon, and hunters gonna hunt. For pete's sake, killing of animals by other animals happens all the time in the wilde. :-/

The obvious answer is to teach them all to eat free-range, organic, fair-trade, non-blood money, tofu. Even the lions.
Does that mean we should imprison dolphins who rape and kill other dolphins?

Just feel bad about it. Cry while doing it.

No, but certainly eat only tuna that is dolphin-safe.
We're predators, however, in general, those capable of hunting other higher order mammals probably have other reliable sources of food.

Interestingly if you think dogs are too smart to eat, pigs are actually smarter.

I don't have the time or inclination to read that, but yeah, dolphins are smart enough to have friends and miss them when you eat them. They can hold a grudge or feel something resembling empathy. In general we should probably quit shitting in the oceans for our own sakes, if not for theirs.

How do you determine if pigs are smarter than dogs, and what does that even mean?

It's more that dog meat just tends to be too stringy. Also have you ever tried to make bacon from dog? It just doesn't turn out right.
A certain South Park episode comes to mind...

That was my first idea too, but the pigs might have an unfair disadvantage there since they don't speak English.

That's an interesting question. Domesticated dogs have been companion animals for a long time & they've evolved specifically to get on well with humans & in my experience dogs come in all different levels of intelligence & a lot of them act dumber than they are on occasion to meet their own ends (girlfriend's dog does this a lot because she knows it nets her attention.)
