Horus: Having played AD&D, D&D 3E, Warhammer, L5R, Deadlands (Classic), and maybe some more, I think a great yet quite simple system is Deadlands one.
- Skills based on general abilities (Perception, Strength, Spirit, Knowledge and so on) with sub skills you can buy with experience earned (like guts, medicine, shoot: rifle, fight: knife, quick draw, etc.)
- Simple damage system with definitive damages,
- Advantages and Hindrances (mandatory to obtain characters with souls, not like in D&D ^^).
You should take a look at it, it's not a perfect system but at least an very enjoyable one.

RafaelLopez: Oh my, I hate randomness in character-building (which always yields unbalanced starting characters with different power levels), but you gotta love a western-themed game that has playing cards in character creation! :)

Did I mention that when you're in action mode (gunfight...) you roll dices according to your quickness ability, and for each multiple of 5, you draw a card (example: Quickness 4d10+2 -> 16 -> 3 cards -> 3 actions in that turn).
Then all cards are called from Ace to Deuce and when it's your card, you can make a action, or keep the card in your sleeve for later...
Deadlands system is basically dices plus cards and poker rules...
To throw spells, you draw cards and must get a minimum poker hand to throw it successfully. If you get a better hand, your spell is more powerful.
Also, at each adventure start, you get poker chips that you can consume to reroll dices, have more dices to roll or ignore damages you suffered.
Between adventures, you can choose to consume chips you've kept to get experience points for your character.
This system is frankly excellent.

I'm a hardcore ex-player of DnD and WoD, and current hardcore player of GURPS, and I don't feel like changing, but I gotta see this shit.
As far as perk suggestions go... Do you want (relatively) realistic or just plain fun?
