Maybe the game not starting isnt related to the game itself, but to windows 7. If you want to play games, get xp.

chight10: So I sent the GoG support team a message about 2 weeks ago, and still nothing.

Is there a point in asking for their help, or should I just give up on it?
Don't worry . I'm still waiting for them to change my username . I got the last e-mail about it on 2010.11.24. .

TheEnigmaticT: I just checked. The support staff guys still have a pulse.

That said, they're pretty heavily taxed
They must be in Britain then.

We're all heavily taxed...

Well, in the case of Myst Masterpiece Edition, it says it supports Windows 7.
If gog support was undead. All you would get is help in the words of brains or brainz. A few words from a skeleton or if your lucky something that will help you, thanks to a intelligent undead being on staff.

That said, they're pretty heavily taxed (and yes, we know, and yes, we're working on fixing that). If you sent a message off and haven't heard back in a week or so, a polite follow up is probably a good idea. Also, as mentioned by others, the fora are a good place to get some answers. If the game's not even starting, try all the usuals: redownload, try installing a directory different that the default, make sure that you're running the program as administrator, make sure that all of your drivers are up to date, and try running in windowed mode or in compatibility mode instead of fullscreen / Windows 7 mode.
Any open positions at GOG? :)

Being a necromancer, you know how to contact the undead. You can help then.

I do have XP. Not to slightly hijack this thread with my issue, but if I try to run it, it doesn't even seem to start but if you do CTRL ALT DEL you can see the exe running away there. In a few seconds it suddenly takes up all my CPU and I have to force it closed if I want to do anything with my PC. The DPC process also goes crazy while the Myst exe is running. At no point does Myst appear on the taskbar, though. It's only observable through viewing the background processes.

I tried various things, like messing around with Quicktime - safe mode and installing an older version - which some people advised. I went offline and turned off my firewall and anti-virus and it didn't work. I also tried installing it from a separate disc version and that had the exact same problem.

TheEnigmaticT: try installing a directory different that the default
On that note, why does GOG support the terrible yet widespread practice of installing games in the Program Files folder? I reckon you'd get a good few less tickets just by changing the default install location to something like "C:\games\".

This. Games that tend to create or modify files located in Program Files may fail with that. So installing those games in a folder other than Program Files is always recommended.

Games that use the AppData or Documents folders don't have problems with being installed in Program Files.

Yeah, that's annoying and pretty much the only reason why I have hidden folders (semi)-visible.

KavazovAngel: ...
Simply put: Installing the games to "C:\Games\" won't cause any problems. Installing to Program Files could and in some cases almost certainly will cause problems. So it seems like a no-brainer to me.

GameRager: Installing games have almost always defaulted to program files for years now. I don't see a problem with it.....I just give my program files folders more permissions(write/etc) so I don't get any issues down the line. Some games that couldn't save changes to the config files after I changed their options or save games in general would work fien after giving that game's folder write permissions.
You are correct but problems arise now due to Windows now enforcing permissions correctly. Unfortunately a lot of older programs would save to it's own application directory which isn't permissible anymore for application installed within program files.
