Yo!

My friend and I are currently hooked by LAN, and we were wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to good, free LAN games.

Free and good? Maybe Warsow? It's probably better with more people but you can fill the empty slots with bots...
Actually, Warsow is a great idea, plus you can probably find a few extra players to join on the GOG forums too. I've been meaning to install it, myself. I wish I could get the Linux version running so I could play on my laptop.

Any specific genre?

You can't possibly go wrong with what has to be one of the best team-based shooters ever. I don't know how many people you are, though. You need at least four people for it to make any sense, with six it's already highly playable IMO.

Edit:Ah crap, sorry. I read "my friends". Didn't notice that it's just two guys. Well then ET doesn't make much sense...

Fear Combat
It's a standalone version of the multiplayer component of F.E.A.R.. I haven't ever tried it but I know some people who enjoyed the hell out of it.

Thanks, guys, for the suggestions!

@Licurg: Sorry I didn't get back to you on that. Really, though, we were looking for anything.
Will the PCs have Internet access? If so, Spring is crazy fun. You can still play via LAN, but you'll need Internet access to connect to the main lobby first (I think).

If you guys like turn-based games, try Battle for Wesnoth:

Quite partial to some instant gibbing action in Cube 2: Sauerbraten myself.
