If you haven't played it yet, try Battlezone (the original remake published by Activision in 1998, sequel's great too but not quite as amazing) If you're looking for something with a strong "space vibe" get it now! No other game has given me that feeling of being on a desolate planet like Battlezone has, to the extent that sometimes I had to put the game down because it just made me feel so alone and cold.

It has some of the best atmosphere ever in a game, I played it just recently and it was still giving me chills like it did originally.

The campaigns are both fantastic, and are completely different and lengthy. (and HARD, if you like challenge in your game like I do :)) Great storyline + great gameplay + great atmosphere. Many games nail one or two of those but few deliver all three like Battlezone does.

One of the few games that I'd say is pretty much perfect.

(it's aged very well too, even the graphics still look decent)

Hey Sachys have you heard of this one? Game is still in alpha, but it looks fun.
Just noticed that SpaceSector.com has a series of round-ups on space-themed games currently discounted for the holiday sales. Links: GOG space sales, GamersGate space sales, Steam space sales, Gamestop space sales.

For what it's worth, I hugely recommend Sins of a Solar Empire. For me, it hits that perfect sweet spot of giving me just the right amount of stuff to do - enough for it to feel like a proper strategy game with some meat to it, but not so much that I can't take a few minutes just to enjoy the spectacle of ships gettin' all blowed up in space.

Edit: I haven't tried SOASE: Rebellion yet, but from what I hear it's basically an "enhanced edition" of the original, so it's probably the one to go for. Unless you're on the fence, in which case you could try the much cheaper SOASE: Trinity as a sort of 'complete demo'.

Edit 2: and Rebellion just popped up on a Steam flash sale for 66% off,, or $13.59. Also on Flash Sale: Endless Space 66% off.

Yes - "Sins..." was previously reccomended to me - though sadly I decided to wait in the sales and ended up spending what little I had on other games - mostly for other people! heheh! - and now its at 66% off. not a huge problem though as it's my birthday at the end of january so I'm sure I can bag either a retail or daily deal then! Thanks for the sales sites though - bookmarking!

Haven't actually - not the kind of thing I'm likely to play on PC (Ur Quan does it for me in 2d!) but it looks like itd make a great android game!

ALSO:

Think I should edit the original post to include all the suggestions so far? - theres so many games ive not heard of that have been suggested, and undoubtedly some other contributers have missed too.
