So I've been on a major sidescrolling platformer kick lately, playing through a lot of old classics like Castlevania 4, Ninja Gaiden, and Super Ghouls n' Ghosts. I'm not satisfied yet, though, and now I'd like to play something modern. I'm not picky about how modern, just... something later than 2000, I guess. Why am I asking for modern games? Partly to see something new, partly to see what the platforming scene is up to nowadays.

What I want is an action platformer that emphasizes both platforming and combat, like the games I just mentioned. I am not looking for a puzzle game or a 100% pure platformer right now. I strongly prefer sidescrollers over 3D platformers.

The other requirement is that it runs on Windows. I do not own a modern console.

Iji, Oniken, Ares: Extinction Agenda, and Project Black Sun are good examples of the sorts of games I'm looking for. Giana Sisters and They Bleed Pixels look like they might be fun, but I have not purchased them.

What I really want, though, is a challenge - something I have to work at to complete, as long as it's a fair and realistic challenge. Yes, I do consider Ninja Gaiden a fair challenge, overall.

Thank you!
Just to get this out of the way - You played Spelunky?
Mark of the Ninja counts?
If Ninja Gaiden is a fair challenge, then I'm sure you'll enjoy I Wanna Be The Guy. It's free, and they even came out with a "Gaiden" version recently! (Gaiden is still in beta, though.)
Like Licurg said, Spelunky. It's a bit of a recent addiction for me but it didn't cost anything, and the music! Oh lordy, does it ever bring me back to those halcyon days of yore.

That said, Intrusion 2 was pretty excellent!
Escape Goat and Probability 0 ftw. Dustforce might qualify, as well.

Not as tough, but Jottobots, Out There Somewhere and Waking Mars are also great.

Intrusion 2 ("Humble Store" http://www.humblebundle.com/store/intrusion2)
Treasure Adventure (GOG)
Aquaria (Steam)
Oniken (Desura)
Megabyte Punch (Desura)
Chester (Desura)
Cave Story+ (Desura)

All excellect, semi-retro but still modern, and have minimal puzzles.

Hmmm... Yes, based on this I'd recommend Intrusion 2, Gianna Sisters, and Chester.

And Gianna Sisters kicks my ass.
surprised there's been no mention of La Mulana yet.
I must admit I really enjoyed Rochard which is astonishingly weird as I usually hate platformers.
I really hate them.
Well except for Trine and Rochard.

Love it but it's pretty puzzle intensive. I think he was lookng for games with minimal puzzles.

Though there's not much combat, if you want hard search for Super Meat Boy on steam.
In addition to what has been suggested already:

Bunny Must Die
Noitu Love 2: Devolution
Eternal Daughter (free)
Corril Slayer
Lylian Episode 1: Paranoid Friendship
Frogatto & Friends (free)
Hurrican (Tyrrican hommage, free)
Climb to the Top of the Castle (free, but maybe it's tending more toward platformer than you like? not sure where to draw the line)
1213 Episode 1-3 (bit similar to Prince of Persia, free)
Maldita Castilla (GnG hommage, free, but still in the making)

No idea how hard or easy you'd find each one of them though (I think especially Eternal Daughter should be quite challenging).

Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams is fun and about as hard as you want to make it (playing perfectly is excruciatingly hard, to the point that some of the devs reportedly had to turn on cheats to test their own levels).
