cogadh: I'm not necessarily a fan of the crazy homophobe's work in general, but his work on this game was fantastic.

He's a crazy homophobe? But what about that scene where Ender naked wrestles some dude in the shower?

He essentially said that the people of the United States should revolt because the government is too friendly to gay people. I'll try to find the quote.

Here's a sampling of his "work" as it relates to gay marriage an homosexuality in general:
"The first and greatest threat from court decisions in California and Massachusetts, giving legal recognition to 'gay marriage,' is that it marks the end of democracy in America. These judges are making new law without any democratic process; in fact, their decisions are striking down laws enacted by majority vote."
"Laws against homosexual behavior should remain on the books, not to be indiscriminately enforced against anyone who happens to be caught violating them, but to be used when necessary to send a clear message that those who flagrantly violate society's regulation of sexual behavior cannot be permitted to remain as acceptable, equal citizens within that society."
On same sex marriage: "potentially devastating social experiment"
On same sex marriage rights: "Any homosexual man who can persuade a woman to take him as her husband can avail himself of all the rights of husbandhood under the law."
On gay rights activism: "gay activism as a movement is no longer looking for civil rights, which by and large homosexuals already have."
That's just what was in the Wiki article on him, I couldn't find the exact quote that PoSSeSSeDCoW referenced.

Faithful: Anyone play Advent Rising? I would really like to know what it is like as the images make it seem a bit sparse and lifeless.
avatar
Nalin: They do seem lifeless, huh. Anyways, it is very action packed, with lots of enemies jumping around at you. In the game, you can wield a weapon in your left and right hand. The left mouse button fires the left hand weapon, and the right mouse button fires the right hand weapon. Targeting is done via the mouse wheel. You scroll it to switch between the enemies on view. You can also manually, but you will be jumping around and dodging so often that it is easier to just swap targets with a quick flick of the wheel.
The fun part is when you get your powers. Powers can be equipped to your hand just like your weapon. Your powers can also unlock a second ability that you can choose between. Your speed power can unlock a time slowdown. Your shield power can unlock a personal shield bubble. You can move a single enemy around with your levitate ability, or lift up multiple enemies and toss them to the side. And more for your other powers.
The game really makes you feel like a powerful demi-god, but you are still very vulnerable to attack. The later game is all about using your abilities to annihilate hoards of enemies will minimizing the damage you take.
A flaw that most people originally touched upon when the game was released is the fact that your powers level up by using them. This is fine in and of itself, but all you need to do is spend a little while spamming your powers into a wall to have them reach max level.
Anyways, it is one of my favorite games, so I would recommend you pick it up. The only thing you have to worry about is the steep-ish system requirements. I remember it chugging a bit on my GeForce 6600 back in the day. Even today, maxing it out chugs my 8800 GTX a bit.

Thanks for the information, and +1 to help you along! :o)
Another one here already in possesion of the greatness that is Psychonauts :( Might give Bloodrayne a try as I never played it back in the day.

It was a while ago, but I managed to find the article.

The link to the op-ed he wrote is dead, but that's probably because the Mormon Times deletes old articles.

It seems like Mr. Card protesteth rather too much, no? I'll be watching for him to be arrested in an airport toilet stall or caught with rent boys and crystal meth or whatever.
Sadly I have these games, otherwise I would have snapped them up.
Bring on the Vampire games!
Thnx GOG
The URL for this thread pertains to the Advent Rising release -- I think somebody at GOG was a little excited. ;)

Zeewolf: Too bad these are also the only decent PC-games they've released. :-)

Theres also Worms 4...
avatar
cogadh: I wonder if we will see any of Majesco's other... less popular... titles on GOG, like Blow Out or Jaws Unleashed.

Drake of the 99 Dragons!
Looks like Killer 7....damn shame it's a piece of crap (apparently).

I would write down this too, but I didn't wanted to bother in my previous post. =P
Both this one and the advent rising release URL are wrong. And, chronologically, the Psychonauts news should show upper in the front page, not below.

Yay! I've heard so many great things about Psychonauts recently, I was planning on downloading Gametap just to play it. Now I can get it lovely and DRM-free forever.
Too many games to play and so little time... :(
Uggh I can't stand Orson Scott Card (as a person, not as a writer. Never have read any of his books)

The weird thing is that Ender is totally the opposite of Orson Scott Card. It's very confusing.

soulgrindr: PS/ I know it's be against the "good" part, but i have a strange desire to try out Jaws Unleashed as well.. gog needs a "bog" section where they sell bad old games for $1.99 or something...
Not to derail this thread but I agree! There are a lot of mediocre / awesomely bad games that might be worth $2.

His books are good, if slightly generic. Not really my cup of tea, but the guy's a solid SF genre writer with a good command of writing (especially plot), even if a bit of a journeyman. Can't say I go in for the Bible Belt stuff he's into, but America's a free country. Thankfully, you can still voice your opinion, even if it is stupid.
I never really saw homphobia in his books. That whole "OSC is the Big Bad" that went down on the blogs when Shadow Complex got released thing kind of came out of left field for me.
