Keiji Inafune, the creator of Mega Man, is kickstarting his new game: Mighty No. 9.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mightyno9/mighty-no-9?ref=recently_launched

Let's not mince words here, this game is a Mega Man game, it only carries a different name because Capcom still holds the rights to that.

And, good news, it's coming to PC on Steam and DRM-free.
I was about to post this, but you beat me to it.

While i was watching the KS video the amount pledged went from 147k to 154k. Looks like it will make it without a doubt.

Who knows?

Project Phoenix was going that fast, but now it 's been stuck around 600k for days.

It's at 276k now. That's an impressive amount for a project that has been up for just a few hours. Another reason is that Keiji Inafune is on it, he made some of the best games ever made. Also people really want another Mega Man after CRAPCOM killed the franchise.

Armikrog has the same goal and made it even with all the controversy around TenNappel's opinion on same sex marriage and despite being a spiritual successor to a pretty unkown game (The Neverhood). Other much more niche games made it as well (Elite, for example), why wouldn't the successor to Mega Man make it?

Tossed in 20$, surprised that porting to consoles is such a high reward tier. You would think that they would make the profit from the game much bigger and be minor to port.

Have to say though that I am assuming they will make it to the support linux tier, if not I'll pull back.
I'm interested, but the wait is just too long since they don't have basically anything but some sketches and concept art done yet. Also, $20 seems a little bit too much. The last two Mega Man games cost half of that.

So, I guess I'll wait 'til the game's released and has a proper sale price.
This is how it should be, games need to harken back to the glory days. Fuck the new shit.

Edit: Also new megaman better not be able to shoot vertically

Pretty neat, but it's kind of sad that after all these years he's basically creating the same game.
Even the enemies are only slightly different.
Still, if it makes it I'll get it.
What a start ! 50% in one day ?

I had the same impression. I think it's time they try to evolve the MegaMan platformer genre.

For example, throw in some social crap like facebook intergration, CoD ranks and co-op, Multiplayer death match!!!1111!

Just kidding but I would like some kind of customization system where you can form combos with the energy you absorb from dead bosses to give a little depth in the gameplay. New and more variety of enemies would also serve a good purpose.

All right, I'm all in. $280 offered to a good cause (hope they make it to the Mac&Linux stretch goal).
It is going up in hundreds every few seconds O_O
I'm glad to see that fans are putting money where their mouth is. I didn't know Mega Man until I started bumping into a lot of its fans online who have been itching to play this genre. It's not my type of game but I wish them well. It looks like they won't have any problem exceeding the goal.

It does look like they're adding to the whole absorbing-enemy-powers thing to some degree--the boss powers might change how the main character gets around and interacts with the environment (climbing walls and the like), and you can absorb temporary powers from minor enemies as well. Sounds promising.
