This is probably a stupid question, but I recently decided to trade my backpack for a messenger bag. When I hoist it on my shoulder, should the bag be hanging by my side or touching my back?

Touching your back. You don't want people mistaking it for a handbag, or a purse or whatever Americans call women's bags.

Thanks. I had it touching my back; I was just paranoid that I was doing it wrong.

Nah, from what I've seen that's normal enough. But they're not especially common in this neck of the woods, to be honest.
