Is the entire series a good buy? And could you see it going for any less at some point within the next year or two?
I'm not sure if the series will go lower than 75% off. I say go for it. Five great games (well, four plus one 3D remake) for under $10 is a great deal. If you're into adventures or puzzle solving you should get plenty of hours of entertainment.
Do you like interactive screensavers? Yes? Then this series is for you.

Hey that's not fair... screensavers have animation!

Of course I'm kidding, I love the Myst series.

It won't get any cheaper than this unless it's a gift ;-p

And not having to swap CD's - priceless!

You clearly don't like insane puzzle games ;-p

Myst nearly turned me off adventure gaming for good.

Luckily, I had also bought Gabriel Knight 1 + 2 on that fateful month in 1999, so not all hope was lost.

While reading up I learned that 3 and 4 are not here on gog, and people have been waiting for years. It seems there's the standard legal issue with somebody else (Ubi in this case) holding game rights. Thus, it seems the Myst series will never be complete.
I know a lot of people don't seem to look fondly on the Myst series, but I remember it pretty fondly myself. I was sick a lot growing up, and I remember my father buying a copy and bringing it home one day. We sat and watched the "Making of" video and sat around playing the game and trying to solve the puzzles. While it may not be the best adventure game out there, it certainly made a lot of my worst times during my childhood a bit brighter. Maybe it was just spending that time with my old man. :)

I would recommend getting them if you like the Myst series, it's a great deal for the ones available on GOG. :)
So what's the deal with myst? I somehow missed it back in the day and looking at it now it looks really really uninteresting. Why do people talk about it so much, what am I missing?
I think I would have enjoyed this series much more had I tried them previous to college before I killed off 99% of my brain cells. YES they are a good purchase, if you aren't like me. :P

I've always had a beef with screensavers. I'm still considering Myst, though -- mostly because I was curious about it when I was younger, but didn't really know what I was supposed to do when I first started playing (maybe because I was used to more linear games on SNES?) It's disappointing that the entire series isn't included, though. I wonder if Ubi will add them at some point since there are some titles from that publisher here.

If it looks really really uninteresting then don't get it. Fox's joke about screensavers is kinda true.

They're puzzle point n click games with mostly static images. You're basically interacting with lush pictures. The appeal to Myst is how novel it was at the time. It has a definite mood, as you wander alone in worlds with no other people and nothing to hold your hand. You have to figure out what's going on, and how to proceed by yourself. I found the story both interesting and rather fresh, though I only played Myst and Riven (#2).

So is it one of those "you had to play it back then" kind of games?
When I was young I'm used to hate this series...I found it boring.
Then, some years ago, I bought the Cyan pack from Steam, and tried again to play it.
And it was amazing.
Myst games are all about exploration, puzzle soling (hard puzzle solving) and a very good plot.
I haven't played the original Myst because I can't managed to run it on my PC, but instead I played Real Myst, that is basically the exactly same game, with a new age, and 3D support instead of static screen.
I loved this game. It's the only game where I read ALL documents...and when I will have some money, I will buy the books too.
Riven is still magnificent, it will requires you month to be completed without a guide.
Then there are Myst 3 and 4, by Ubisoft: some people hate this games, but I still love them, I think that Myst 4 is one of the best chapter of the series after the first two titles.
Then there is Uru, is amazing how I enjoyed this game. It starts slowly, but then exploring the world of Uru will become a drug.
Finally Myst 5, that basically is a sequel tu Uru. A good game with a good ending for this saga, but not one of the best chapters.

In the end yes, but all the games you can, but remember: this games are about exploration, there are a few dialogues (well in Myst 3 and 4 there are a lot), but basically you are always alone and you will learn the story of Myst by reading documents and searching the location, understanding how the game world works.
It's a great saga, but not for all players.

Nostalgia is definitely a part of it I think. I don't believe that Hidden Object or Point And Click games really existed, certainly not as genres, so Myst was both the first and only kid on the block. Thus, it may not be quite as "unique" today as it was back then.

However, the images were gorgeous (subjective), the puzzles hard (objective), and the story fairly engaging (subjective). Myst has a "special" status in my mind as a game, but it's hard for me to say how much is nostalgia and how much justified. It's hard for me to compare as I'm not familiar with what PAC games are like today. The game is primarily puzzle solving via point and click, so if you like that, then I recommend the games. If you don't like PAC puzzles, skip it.

As always, watching Let's Plays helps.
