Heard of this Naev game?
http://blog.naev.org/

Just mentioning it, because there has been some activity at the developer site... After a looong pause.
I can recommend it already as version 0.5.3 for those who like Elite/Frontier created into a 2d world.
Hoping developer(s) will pick it up and get it all they way to a final release this time :)

I'm currently in the tutorial and I'm intrigued but I have to ask:
is combat about moving quickly with the arrows? I simply hate games that have the old asteroid movement where you turn with left and right and have to accelerate and decelerate in a very precise manner, I have never learned the technique.

It's been really long time since my epic gaming session but yeah maybe something on those lines... but there was some sort of advanced mechanics... can't remember more

Oh yeah Escape Velocity, something like that I guess... But wasn't that only on Mac or did they make a PC version too?

edit: Seems EV Nova is available for PC at least, no idea if it's good... 30 dollars.. hmm

I have started playing and so far transport missions works but I won't be able to fight with lasers, I can't hit shit so I'll have to purchase guided missiles as soon as I can afford it but I think I can avoid taking combat missions altogether.

took me awhile to get the hang of it... yeah there are some tough fights in this game... cargo missions are a nice way to make money, just don't accept the ones that are impossible to complete :)
I played it a while back. It's immensely atmospheric, the music and artwork is gorgeous, but there wasn't that much to actually do in that build. Most of the planets were empty husks with little more than procedurally generated delivery or search-and-destroy missions.
yep, that's a big minus, the slowly (or not so slowly) building feeling of "oh what's the point" :)
what kept me at it so long was the different factions, and how there was a bit of conflicts going on later on,
and the player had some saying in what side to follow...
But it too got boring in the end.
The atmosphere was good though.
If the development is going to pick momentum, then yeah maybe it might be a great game.
As for now, it's free, on Steam Greenlight, and v. 0.5.x...
