As one of our first Majesco releases, check out Advent Rising - a true gem of a game that you just might have overlooked.
Advent Rising is a third-person action-adventure game, set in a bright, distant future. The greatest feature of this title is its story, with the script written by the famed sci-fi writer Orson Scott Card. You take the role of Gideon Wyeth, a gifted pilot on the most important mission in the history of Humanity - first contact with an alien race. As is often the case, everything goes ssmoothly until something goes wrong and soon mankind finds itself on the brink of annihilation. If you're a science fiction fan, you should definitely play this game, even if you're not fond of action games. You don't have to be a sci-fi fan to like Advent Rising, though, as it's a great action-adventure game in its own right.
I am a sci-fi fan and I cannot wait to play this game.
Thanks GOG.
Fun game, although the controls were a bit clunky on the PC. And it is one of Orson Scott Card's few stories that doesn't involve an intelligent child using the interweb to save the world :p
Seriously though, it is a lot of fun. Just really unpolished.
I always wanted to try this one... so i've been waiting so find it at a budget price. I think i'll have to pick it up as soon as i finish the game i'm on now.
I heard it's flawed, but it sounds interesting enough for $5.99
It's still really worth it at this price. Instant buy for me as i never got round to it when it was released.
Has it been patched/updated since the original release ? or are there any community patches out there?
Oh, it is definitely worth 6 bucks. There are some really fun levels, and some of the powers were actually really well done. Fun to pop up a barrier as you advance on a solid wall of baddies.
Where it tends to fall apart are some of the boss battles (although, the controls may have been the problem there), and the heavy emphasis on the "endless waves" approach for combat.
Hell, I am half tempted to download/code a simple trainer to get infinite energy for powers. Would probably be a fun romp :p
/me is suddenly getting in the mood...
I don't think the controls were all that bad; basic WSAD, "flick targeting" with the mousewheel, left and right-click for left and right weapon fire... pretty straightforward. Plus, it is an excellent game with an engaging, though incomplete, story (the game intended as the first of a trilogy that never happened). I especially liked how the choice you make early on the game significantly changes some of the basic story elements and even one of the major boss fights. I only wish they had more events like that and created a kind of branching storyline. All-in-all, AR is a fun game, I'd recommend it to anyone who likes a shooter with a good story.
Hmmm, I wonder if it still has that bug where if you turn on one of the advanced graphics options, it basically kills anti-aliasing...
This is by far one of my most favourite games of all time. The gameplay was good, the story was excellent and the world was amazing - I would fully suggest this to anyone who just wants to have a good time with a game, diverse missions and a game where you can actually care about what is going on, highly praised.
I liked this game a lot when I played it on the XBox years ago. The only real thing I hated was the ending. It was like they planned the ending because of a sequel but there was never a sequel so the story kind of just ends like it was about to start a new chapter. So you sit there with the credits rolling going that's it?
Well that's great! Advent Rising it's a nice game with some great ideas but lacking in polish. I played it years ago and I think I'm gonna buy it soon!
Thank you gog
definetely getting this :D
This is a game I wanted to try out years ago, and for six bucks, it's very tempting.
I'm not sure how the controls would work with keyboard and mouse, though. On the Xbox, you targeted by flicking the right analog stick in the direction of whatever you wanted to shoot, or so I heard.
The PC version does have DirectInput gamepad support in case I find it preferable, right?
Looks great sold here now i need to stop looking at Gog 105 games i have now fromyou guys damm you why you have to be so cheap and have such great games :)
AAAAAAH! You tempt me so hard GOG!
One more for the wishlist, to be bought after I get my credit straight. Would love to see the music soundtrack of this one on the extras soon though. I've got some of the songs on my HD around somewhere, yet never played the game. It's got some great choral work in there. Love it to bits.

Sadly that's exactly what happened. This was going to be a trilogy of games originally. Majesco was a small publisher that was having a bit of success (with titles like BloodRayne) and so they bet big, on this game and on Psychonauts. Both excellent games IMO.
Anyhow, both games tanked, I think Advent Rising also got trashed in reviews if memory serves, Majesco hit a financial rough-spot, and pulled away from big-budget titles. Unfortunately that meant no Advent Rising 2 or 3. Glphyx Games, the developer, folded but the team reformed as Chair Entertainment.
So far as Chair they've released Undertow (meh) and Shadow Complex (awesome!) to Xbox Live Arcade. They also got bought out by Epic between the two games. The founder has expressed interest in completing the Advent Rising trilogy... but doesn't hold the rights. Hopefully Epic & Majesco will one day collaborate to finish the trilogy.
