In addition to banning District 9 because of the Nigerian gangs in the movie, the country is upset over Sony's recent PS3 ad (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cV8QM04Cg_U) where a character says "You can't believe everything you read on the Internet. Otherwise I'd be a Nigerian millionaire by now." The country's Information Minister, Dora Akunyili, does not know how to choose her words carefully; she asks "Why didn't Sony use Japan? JAPANESE BEING CRIMINALS. Don't they have criminals in Japan?"

Uhhh, Ms. Akunyili, you do know what country Sony's from, right? Also, where I come from, this is kind of racist.
Those stupid black people, always like that. (THAT WAS SARCASM, YOU GOOFBALLS.)
Seriously though, they're pissed at something THAT'S TRUE? That half the country spends 9 to 5 in an Internet cafe to send spam to a bunch of people, some of whom will fall for it?
She should have been called the Misinformation Minister.

Obviously, Nigeria must be one of the few countries which do not receive those spams...

She means being as in doing criminal acts, not being as in existing as criminals. You might have a case if she was referring to a country that was once a penal colony, but to my knowledge that is not Japan..
Good to see nigeria finally trying to clean up its act regarding 419 too.
Sounds like a miscommunication, probably just meant use japan because it HAS criminals as much as any other country

Yeah, but if it's Reuter's fault, someone needs to be talked to, because that is a fairly serious mistake.
Don't they have criminals in Japan?
Of course we do. We have lots of innocent people lining up to confess (under duress) to crimes they didn't do! Gotta love the Japanese legal system.... Especially the part controlled by the police and their closed door beating sess--- err... "Investigations".

Thats assuming it was them trannslating, she may well have been speaking in english and gotten a few of the words wrong. She also says "How many shootings do we have in a day in New York", 'we' rather than 'they'. Sounds like the small nuance issues that a lot of non-native speakers stumble over, english is overcomplicated, has crazed implementations of its multidude of rules and exceptions that can make any the rules null and void ("I before E except after C! Oh and also except in these dozen or so cases")
Also just to let my pedantic side show for a minute, you can't really make racist remarks about a company

I remember watching some morning show segment about Japan, and it seemed like they were getting paid by the country to paint it as being full of smiles and happiness. "They sell beer in vending machines here, and no kid buys them! You can leave your car running with the keys in and expect nothing to have happened to it when you get back!" It all seemed way too good to be true.

Now there's a good question...from whom does Nigeria get their spam???

Actually that's mostly true.
Seems to me like most of the serious crime is controlled (as japanese people like things) by the yakuza. And as long as they keep to themselves the police are happy to leave them alone, and spend their time rounding up foreigners and minor criminals.
99.x% conviction rate. No limits on detention. (limited) jury trials only introduced about a month ago.
They either have the best legal system in the world, or the worst. Depends where you are standing.
(actually, Phoenix Wright seems to paint a pretty accurate picture)
