Can anyone help with that? I don't use mods or anything, it worked on this exact PC and windows installation before. Googling just kept saying to remove mods but again, I don't use them. I verified my Steam cache.

I click to load a game or click new game and it instantly crashed with a "Oblivion has stopped working" error.

Edit: Forgot to make it a question, my bad. I will give you heartfelt virtual rep.

Try Running it in windows 7 mode did you update all your vid card and other drivers what about direct x

Your video card may have died!

Install the 1.2 patch

delete the config files from /documents/mygames/oblivion.

Could be related to game dependencies. Maybe one of the required programs got corrupt or something (it happens for whatever reason). You could try deleting the game and reinstalling it so that Steam performs the first time installation again (which takes care of all of those dependencies). Unless you've already tried that.

I'll redownload it overnight if nothing else works.
Oblivion was an infamously buggy game, just about anything can break it. even software outside of Oblivion can cause it to up and crash and burn on you.

I'd recommend trying what fr33kSh0w2012 suggested and delete or rename the /my documents/my games/oblivion folder just to see if it'll work with a fresh config. Also just using OBSE seemed to solve a lot of weird crashing issues I had with the game on Win 7. Hope you get it worked out.

Yeah, thanks to the two of you. I googled when he wrote that and it seems Oblivion hates having left over stuff on a fresh install. Deleted everything in the My Games folder and it started up like a charm.
