I'd also Recommend certain assasin's creed games. Mostly 2, 3 and Brotherhood. They world is open and it surprised me how incredible the story is, and there is alot of RPG in it, though no levels, just a good progression and inventory systems and a whole other game involving encomies, running an assasin's guild and leveling up your assasins to send on missions and running your own town or business. Though in 3 they add import export into the mix and it plays out like a small version of the East Empire Company.

All that is in addition to the engaging story. If someone wants a true RPG with a open world though, I would fully recommend Morrowind, its my favorite open world RPG ever. Runners up would be New Vegas and Gothic games.

How is Guild Wars 2 now? You were very happy with it, but now no one here mentions it at all now?
GW2 makes a really good first impression but doesn't have any sustenance backing it up. They did so many things right and breathed fresh air into the stale WoW dominated MMO market but they just didn't make it memorable at all. However, as KingOfDust pointed out, you don't have to pay a subscription or deal with the free-to-play restrictions.

As far as open ended RPG with a great story I can't think of any that haven't been mentioned. Borders Lands is open but doesn't have a story worth mentioning and the Witcher has an excellent story but is more closed.
what elderscoll game has is lore, which i think makes it for immersive then any bioware games, except mass effect which has a preety good lore,,the only place in dragon age i felt like there was huge past was the deep roads, felt like i was running through moria ( my fav place in lotr)

Coming from a guy who put 200 hours into the game, I loved it to death for being a fun co-op RPG set in a large world. Problem is the instances surrounding the story are terrible to say the least and really don't do the awesome lore and world justice. The open world events themselves are rather basic, but what they lack in depth they more then make up for in nice presentation.

If you are looking solely for a good story then avoid this game, however if you want a throwaway main plot with an interesting world then give it a go.

GW2 is still enjoyable, although I haven't even finished my storyline yet due to being really busy with school and work. The storyline is corny and the theme of unity does come across as really anvilicious to me. They beat you repeatedly over the head with it..

I'm not a fan of Trahearn, mostly because he seems kind of bland his dialogue from what I've seen of it seems so robotic. Maybe a different voice actor would do wonders for him, I'm hoping he goes the way of Togo. No need Flanderize him, just give him a little personality other than zzzzz. This character is important for the later part of the story, unfortunately :/

It does seem like my asuran stops acting well asuran. You would think the asura would have a little more sarcasm or a slight air of arrogance now and then for flavoring. Don't have to go overboard, a little bit of sarcasm goes a long way. I mean, they did have different voice actors for each of the races and genders, I don't think a little change in dialogue would be too much work. I'm not sure about the other races, since I haven't had much time to dedicate to the game.

Nothing much came from home instances, hopefully they will do something with them someday. Personality doesn't effect much other then a different symbol on the menu of the gear screen.

All those gripes aside, the game is worth getting. I like how you get rewarded for exploration and crafting instead of killing crap over and over and over and over again. Killing stuff does not work in your favor unless it is for a quest. Not perfect, but still very innovative and the lack of a dedicated healer does seem to be working for this system.

Kingdom of Amalur... New Vegas & Gothic 1+2, Risen 1 ... Might and Magic 6,7,8... Ultima Underworlds ... Ultima 7... Magic Candle series (these need to be on GoG) ...

But if you meant sandbox/open world with bioware cinematic style then the answer is no games at all.
