I just realized I even harbor slight nostalgic feelings towards the first "plastic boxes" that are commonplace these days, or were, if we consider the digital trend. This is quite surprising.

Big boxes are, of course, the shit. I love 'em, but I don't collect them very much. I've saved most that are still intact (there was a time I couldn't care less about boxes).

Recently I bought X-Wing Collector's Cd-rom (rom, they were called cd-rom once, ah the nostalgia) for cheap from a flea market. I think that version isn't particularly valuable, but it is probably worth more than what I paid for it.

Also Quake III arena in a big box, which I think is worth a bit more than the 2 euro's I paid for it.

I also have this thing called "Legend" or the "Four Crystals of Trazere", from 1992. It says it is some kind of a special edition that has a guide included, but I'm pretty sure all of them were like this. I bought it for about ten euroes out of mild interest sometime last year. No idea of the value.

I've not managed to get it to work, though. The floppies seem fine, but just won't work. I suppose it is so damn old I don't have anything that would run it, which makes me a bit sad. It is available from abandonware sites, of course, but I've not felt retro enough to try it just yet.

And Mechwarrior 4. It is in pretty bad shape, but it has all the components and the cd.

And finally, Shattered Steel components are spread between my apartment and my dad's basement, they are there somewhere. The manual I recall having seen too, but it might be lost to the evershifting sands of time.
All the large boxes are long gone, some of them making good postal supplies. Some publishers had the foresight to know people would chuck them so some actually came with a jewel case inside with all the inlays manuals and even barcodes on them then. It was all about grabbing your attention whilst on the shop shelf after all. I had actually re-bought some games that were nothing but naked discs without the big boxes in DVD case re-release form for the shelf presentation. I've always avoided super large collectors packages with toys, definitely never had space for those or justified the price premiums.

Now I'm just in a drive to sell most physical media, GOGifying them as I go, to keep physical space at a premium.

F1ach: Well, I started playing with Duke Nukem 3D, so I have a ton of stuff from back then, What have I got, well too numerous to mention I guess, I have System Shock 2 which seems probably like a collectors item from the way people here, react at the mention of the game, but I have even games like Daikatana, Devil Inside, Ultima Ascension etc. so there is a lot of different quality titles in my collection. I even have the boxes lol, I miss those most of all, taking a crap has never been the same since DVD cases became the norm.

I still have PS1, PS2, N64, Dreamcast, Gamecube and black xbox, all working, plus a lot of games for them.

As regards "getting into" collecting games, make sure you have a PC that will play them, so older games will not work past XP, Nocturne springs to mind.

chronox12: That sucks about Nocturne. I literally encountered this game for the first time a few hours ago and it looks awesome so I was on the hunt for it today.
Just found this :

I used to be a big collector, after moving a few times that was no longer something I could keep up with.
