The only weird part about the deal is that PS3 owners will need to send for "a free, instant streaming Blu-ray disc that is being made available to all Netflix members". It apparently uses BD-Live to connect to the internet. I guess they're killing two birds with one stone, then, because that would mostly likely mean the service is available on all Blu-Ray players with an internet connection.
EDIT: To say you want them to ship you the disc when it is available, go to netflix.com/ps3, make sure you're logged in, and hit the giant button.

What? So the disc acts as some sort of "DRM"? The Xbox never had to do that.

No, it's nothing like that. It's just something to make up for the fact that they don't have the firmware update ready to run it. They're using a disc initially so they can release it sooner.

Now I get it. Seems like a good idea to get more people into Netflix by putting the Instant Watch on multiple platforms. Too bad I have no Netflix here. Well, we have something like the DVD rental, but nothing like streaming.
Awesome, yet another great feature to add to the PS3
In 5-10 years when they remember that Australia exists. Wonder if we'll get a PSN store with decent amounts of content

I think you need a US address to get a netflix account, as their core business is mailing physical discs. So even if you were able to get the software you'd run into issues getting a netflix account even if they don't force you to use a proxy. This of course could be made moot by offering a "streaming only" account, but I have a feeling that region restrictions would still apply and be set by the movie studios.
Yeah, doesn't really matter though, the point being that we're being screwed again but this time we have company

LOFL, I remember Sony saying "Our research shows that our customers want purchasing options, such as the Sony store, as opposed to rental services such as Netflix".
FAIL, on so many levels.

Well, now they get their rental service. And why is it a fail if it has access to it now? If I knew Netflix was out of my grasp for a while and I were a big company like Sony, I would try to spin it in a positive light, too.

That's just irresponsible. Say what you mean, and mean what you say. If their "customers" wanted to purchase instead of rent movies, then don't get netflix. That's what's wrong with PR, it's all political.
They likely would have meant purchasing limited licence rentals anyway
