These monsters start to hit the shelves.

I saw one today Gigabyte. 690€ street price. Well, it's a graphic card. a big one. something like 30cms long I suspect.

I'm probably getting old because my reaction is more "this is pure madness" than anything else. Dual GPU, 4 gb of DDR5... Retail prices seem to be in the 620-690 €, with an electric consumption of just 450 W (( the first tests tend to show this is even a bit optimistic ...) .

Aside from ill placed phallic complexes, compulsive buyers or wealthy gamers in search of exclusive pieces of equipments, could someone tzell me what are the needs supposedly addressed by this product ?
I've never been a fan of dual GPU cards as they rely too much on drivers to work properly. I would always get a single powerful card and then Crossfire/SLI if needed.

Bigger = better?

Compensating for something?
"just 450W"

My home PC has a 400W PSU, for the whole system!

I will probably never try one of those dual GPUs anyway.

Well, the last system I built was about within the same 700€ budget.
I'll buy one and use an unlicensed nuclear accelerator to power it.

+1 for Spaceballs reference.

Luke, at that speed will we be able to pull up in time?

Sorry that just entered my head, I know it's from Spaceballs but it just fits perfectly with that bit from Star Wars.

Anyway, I have a 6970, just got it in fact a few days ago, seems to be working great at the mo. Dunno if the OP was talking more about the 6990s though since I don't think the 6970s are dual processors just the 6990. Still, it is quite a behemoth compared to my old 4850...
So I take it, to be able to run two of these in Crossfire, I'll have to power down my whole house?

Just maybe.
Wow.

Perfect for Crysis 2 though, right?

It is apparently less demanding than the first game. I reckon all the buildings reducing the view distance (and polygon count) probably helps there. But the engine is supposed to be a lot more efficient too.

And it's an AMD card...
