The fate of the world is not in your hands. Yet.

Imperialism, the famous turn-based strategy that makes you reach for the world domination via economy, diplomacy, and war, is now available on GOG.com, for only $5.99.

It has ever been so, that the Great Powers rule the world. Any world - imaginary or real. At first, you don't even know what is that strange craving in your gut. Then you go and try to satisfy it. Once you take a bite, you never stop craving for more. Such enthralling is the taste of power. Then you become larger, and larger. Those around you start to fear you and respect you. You gain more influence. It becomes easier for you to manipulate others--by promises, threats, or simply by making them dependant of you. You can force them into helping you to increase your dominion even further. Then one day you wake up and discover, that the world trembles at your feet. Good times.

Imperialism gives you the ability to conquer the world by any means you see fit. The turn-based gameplay starts in the year 1825 (which is considered to be the actual beginning of the XIX century), and takes you through the age of technological and economical advancement, as you struggle for dominion with other Great Powers. There's no one key to success here. You'll have to remember all the factors that a leader must take into account: economy, diplomacy, warfare, research, and resource management. Whether you choose to play a random or a historical scenario, remember that it's a cutthroat world out there.

Ever wanted to become the leader of us all? Real power is never given. It's taken, so grab Imperialism now, for only $5.99.

Oh, and by the way--remember how we teased you an upcoming release in the last This Week on GOG? The hint was: “Grow your spheres of influence through guile, trading, or just exploiting those who don’t know any better.“ The game we teased was Imperialism, which was known under the working title Sphere of Influence.

Neat. Haven't seen or played this one in a while (thirteen years or so). Used to be one of my favourite strategy games. It was a little prettier in my memory, though.

Maybe you were playing Imperialism 2?

Nope, definitely the first one. Never played the second one.
Looks interesting but I wonder if the graphics are tolerable.

Wanted to play something around the time of Paradox's Victoria 2 but its one of their hardest games
Wishted
Love it! I hope Imperialism2 comes out soon as well!!!!
Great game :) Buying this one and waiting for Imperialism II :)
One of the best games of all time, and this is not nostalgia speaking, I only discovered this germ 3 years ago and it has quickly become my most played game ever. It is a perfect fit for anyone who likes strategy games (the thinking ones, not the action type).

Yes, they are quite tolerable. One of the better games I've ever seen in terms of graphics holding up after all these years. Imperialism used watercolor and pencil artwork drawn by hand for the game, and it was a stroke of genius.

Unfortunately, the game was rushed, and even with the 1.1 patch Imperialism multiplayer was buggy. Does anyone want to let us know if GoG attempted to patch these bugs, or are they selling 1.1? If the latter, I have to caution everyone that multiplayer will crash and corrupt save games before you can finish. It will crash at a certain turn (say, Winter of 1845), and from then on out no matter how far back of a saved game you load, it will always crash at Winter 1845. It's one of the reasons why the Imperialism community has been looking for a remake (open source or otherwise) for about a decade now (and teams at places such as http://s1.zetaboards.com/Imperilist/index/ are still working on them).

Still, Imperialism is hands down my favorite game of all time, and I can't recommend it enough. There has never been a strategy game that so fully immerses the player into the role of emperor/king/dictator/etc., and there most likely never will be. If I wasn't poor, this is the game I would be gifting to everyone just so they can play it. Get it, and you will not be disappointed.

(Also, while the game specifics aren't terribly accurate, the simplified mechanics of diplomacy combined with industry, trade, and warfare are solid enough that they helped me sleep my way through a year of college history classes.)
One of my favorites.
I prefer it to Imperailsm 2 simply because there are quite a few games dealing with the 1500 and 1600's (when Imperialism 2 is set) but few dealing with the 19th Century Great powers.
I have downloaded and tested the GOG version, and they seemed to have fixed the Zoom out map bug. If you tried to zoom out the standard view on the main playing map ,tinto a world view mpa, he game crashed on all post WIndows 98 Windows systems. SInce there is another smallworld view map in a window on the right side it was not a game stoper but it is nice to have the game fully functional again. Thanks ,GOG.
