Beware the eagle!

Shelter, a unique exploration and survival game that lets you experience the wonders and hardships of an animal life in a beautiful surrounding of the colorful virtual forest, is available 10% off on GOG.com. That's only $8.99 for the first week!

For many of us, the most appealing part of gaming is the ability to see the world from a different perspective, and experience a life much different from our own. For the most part, games take us to different universes to achieve that. When you think about it, though, there's a whole different world neighboring the realm of humans: the animal kingdom. To us, each forest is an undiscovered land that we'll never be able to explore and understand in full. To do that, one would have to be able to look at it through the eyes of an animal. Breathe in all the fascinating scents, follow all of its hidden paths, feel the moist dirt beneath your clawed paws--experience the life of a forest critter. Not many games explore this fascinating setting. This one does, and it does it beautifully!

Shelter lets you roam the wild as a mother badger, taking care of her jaunty little cubs. The wild is beautiful and bountiful, but don't take Mother Nature's generosity for granted, and don't feel too confident. You'll need to explore your surroundings in search of water, food, and safe haven, while constantly keeping an eye out for the lurking predators. Danger waits at every step, especially for your furry children. Hunger, cold, and death--that's what the fate has in store for them, if you don't tend to them properly. Terrifying as it may sound, the game's beautiful graphics and meditative soundtrack by Retro Family will grant you many moments of awe and relaxed bliss.

Into the wild, friends! If you like unique gaming experiences, get Shelter for only $8.99 on GOG.com. The release 10% discount offer lasts until Wednesday, September 4, at 9:59AM GMT.
Looks very interesting. Wishlisted for now.
I'm afraid you won't be badgering me into buying this one today.
That eagle will chomp me for breakfast.
Bad timing for this launch. There's not much chance of any success at this game down my way - being a Somerset badger is strictly a short term project :(

(straining hard to restrain any political angle in this post)
Neat, I say. Likeable art stile.
And now for something completely different.

--- Monty Python ---

I think I'll pass on this one.
Seems like a very interesting game... will definitely try it out!
This looks interesting, I think I might snag it when I get a second.
On that note, does anyone else get a bit of a Tokyo Jungle vibe. I
have it as an import, and it's making buying this game even more
tempting. :)
And this gets released just as a mass cull of badgers commences in the UK. I don't know if the timing is unfortunate or a little political. Either way it's a very interesting looking game, with or without the politics of badgers.

I've finished the game (once again thanks Soldatov!) so as it was requested by some people I'll share my feelings. Well, at the beginning let's face the truth: I was not mother of the year on my first playthrough ;)

But ok, some more details about the game:
- It's short. I believe you can finish it in one hour.
- Most probably longer on the first run because at the beginning you'll spend at least several minutes calling your cubs. Their answer is so cute you'll be doing it all the time ;)
- The game is nothing like animal simulators from 90s, namely and Lion. Shelter is linear - there are several "chapters" where you find yourself in a dangerous situation (like night, fire, heavy rain) and you have to behave properly to protect your cubs and get to the next chapter.
- In each chapter you have to feed your cubs. Digging up vegetables, shaking off apples, hunting... but it may get a bit tricky! If you do it carelessly one of them may gobble everything and the rest will starve. Fortunately they are not identical and sooner or later you will figure out which one is more hungry than the other.
- In most cases cubs follow you obediently but you have to be careful not to let any of them get lost. If they see a vegetable they may run towards it and wait there until you dig it up. They may get scared and disperse in panic. Be careful when you are hunting because you are faster - they may get lost and even if they can see you sometimes they won't have any idea how to reach you.
- It's more a piece of art than a game. Its purpose is to make you think about nature, the circle of life, being protective... If you are thinking you'll be playing as a badger hero who comes to save the day then this game is definitely not for you. It's not an action nor puzzle game. You won't ask yourself questions like "hmm... how to solve it? What should I do?" Everything will come naturally... I would say you are not supposed to play this game, you should rather experience it...
- I highly recommend it to anybody who likes virtual art
So glad to see this on GOG.com, thank you! I had seen a preview for this on Steam and wishlisted it there. I'm happy however, to be able to pick this up here instead. I know it'll be a fun challenge and I may have to fight my daughters for time playing this one as they both enjoy animal games of any kind.

Recently they both have been playing Wolf Quest a free single or multiplayer wolf simulation game.

Thank you for posting about Wolf and Lion Gorphm (and your review) as I remember hearing about those back when they first came out but had entirely forgotten about them. These would definitely be ones I'm interested in seeing here, added my vote.

Also just had to laugh when I saw tinyE's comment on the cubs, thanks for the laugh :-)

Compliment: this game apparently has some of the best graphics of the year. Impressive. Very innovative gameplay too.

Rant: taking the time to write such an impressive innovative game like this and putting a BADGER in the lead role... kind of feels like a waste. The author might argue that the badger premise is the whole point that makes the game innovative and unique, but I beg to differ. Great-looking survival games do not exist, so this would be a first if it was a human survival in the wild game.
