I find it odd that everyone (even GOG) likes calling System Shock an RPG. Just because it was made by Richard Garriott back in the days, doesn't make it an RPG. Roleplaying games take some roleplaying to be. As there're no other character to roleplay with, it's a first-person shooter with an inventory and XP.

That of course applies to System Shock 1. I never played System Shock 2. But I suspect it's the same case.

G-Doc: T! I keep telling you that you need to learn your games ;-)
You keep forgetting he hates System Shock, too.

(He keeps disconnecting from the IRC whenever we mention System Shock)

No jokes in the advertising about spending Valentin's Day with SHODAN? I'm disappointed.
The number of wishes fulfilled on the community wishlist curiously just jumped up a notch ... a big notch :)

Again, congrats GOG!

I haven't heard many people call SS1 an RPG. SS2 has stuff like stats and skills, but no xp as such -- you can upgrade your stats at specific locations for cybernetic modules that you scavenge and get as a quest reward. Usually people call it an FPS/RPG hybrid or an FPS with RPG elements.

It's weird, since your description fits System Shock 2 somewhat (as Cybernetic Modules could be accounted for experience points), but the original game definitely does not have any of that.

olanorig: This gigantic release is all over the net now.
And yet, of course, it's being ignored by IGN and Gamespot. I did see it posted on CNET yesterday though. I guess CBS is not suing Night Dive Studios or GOG.

The same thing applies to most JRPGs I grew up with, it doesn't stop anyone from calling them RPGs, so I'm not really sure why System Shock or System Shock 2 are any less deserving the "RPG" tag than games like Final Fantasy IV or Chrono Trigger.

Congratulations to GOG! I think this release shows how passionate and vigilant you guys are to get the rights to sell these games.

I would love to read an article about everything that had to be sorted out to get the rights to sell System Shock 2, but that would probably be against the policies of GOG and all the other companies involved.
Alright, I'll bite, I'm buying this.

But people rarely talk about the first System Shock and I never played that, should I play that one first or go straight for System Shock 2?
Overrated
I'm going to pick this one up now in case some suit somewhere decides he deserves a slice of this copyright clusterfuck and files a DMCA takedown.

Did you take notice of the RPS interview? Of course, it's not exactly what you ask for, but probably the most you'll get.

It's because of all the hype, and these COD kids don't know how to play a game that doesn't run with WASD+mouselook straight out of the box.

I'm tired of answering the second question, though.
I will wait.

I don't believe the hype :)
