kavazovangel: World of Warcraft.
I was playing Disciples 2 today, and there is this one track which I have come to the conclusion was ripped off by WoW 6 or so years later.

It's this one track from Wrath of the Lich King.

I highly doubt it since they used a whole orchestra to create the music for WoW, but I haven't played D2, so I cannot judge, I guess.

I'm not having a go at the WoW OST, I love it, I'm just saying it's unmistakable. You know that zone in Northrend which is entirely devoted to PvP? It's the track from that I believe.

F4LL0UT: Anyhow, I was wondering if some of you guys have some personal favourites that you consider masterpieces in terms of audio (no matter how old or new).
Very oldskool examples:

One of the best uses of the poor old Adlib OPL-2 FM synthesis (and it is not Cryo's "Dune"):

I'm surprised how such tinny sounds can create such an ominous feeling.

Roland MT-32 memorables that really seemed to take it to its limits in somewhat interesting ways (skipping the most obvious Sierra, Origin and LucasArts adventures etc.):

The in-game music of Utopia. (unfortunately Youtube videos seem to have vanished, examples only with SB/Adlib and Tandy sounds are available, it seems)

The intro of Lethal Weapon (yes, movie tie-in game; haven't found the Roland intro music in Youtube or elsewhere; I used it to sell my old Roland LAPC-1 sound card for a high price to a friend of mine, he was hesitating due to the price, but promptly bought it after hearing that intro.)

The in-game music in Ocean's "TFX" and "Inferno", overall probably the finest examples of Roland MT-32 game music eva. Not overly original tunes or anything, just veeeery well done.

For Roland SCC-1, I skip again the most obvious Origin games etc., and mention "Jurassic Park" in-game music. They did splendid job with SCC-1, using its extra features (over General MIDI) to the full, creating a dreamlike feeling to such a simple movie license game.
The soundtrack of the Indie game Sequence also is great, much music by Ronald Jenkees, for example this one:

I'll second the Bastion soundtrack, here is a live sample (most tracks do not have vocals): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGxgFxF47XY

The Hitman2 soundtrack was great. Don't really remember the soundtrack from the other games of the series.
Soundvoyager for the GBA: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C12WRgfIOC8

The sound sources become invisible after a short while. Headphones were essential since the GBA was stereo but only had one speaker.
Thanks for the many suggestions. Being an experienced gamer I already knew some of the games suggested here but I'll certainly look into all of them.
There are many good examples (even those some forget)

Battlefield 3 (that has been mentioned before) is one. Amnesia: The Dark Descent is another. I showed it to one of my sound design teacher (who's a professional Sound Designer for video games) and he said that it's one of those project that he would've loved to work on. Mass Effect (particularely 2) is another good example particularely on a creative point of view. The sound effects for aliens in particular are very well done.

There are many others I could mentioned but I prefered to stick to modern examples.
I'll never ever forget MoO2 as a kid. Could just sit and drift away to that all night long. So engrossing.
I second Bastion, Machinarium and Mark Morgan (Fallout, Planescape: Torment). These are my favourite soundtracks ever!

But recently, I felt in love with Journey soundtrak, so beautiful...
I've never paid much attention to sound effect myself, but I love good soundtracks and I have several favorites myself. Mainly:

Deus Ex
VVVVVV
Mirror's Edge
Aquaria
Shatter
Tower of Heaven

POLE7645: Amnesia: The Dark Descent is another.
I can vouch for this one, the sound job on this was great.

I just remembered that Metro 2033 was also fantastic in that aspect.

Ron Jenkees is the man. And Sequence has a lot of great music in it:)
