Consoles you bought after they were either discontinued or their time of popularity eclipsed. (For instance a Japanese person buying an Xbox 360 in 2011 or an American buying a Sega Saturn in 1999 whereas an American buying an Xbox 360 in 2011 would not be unusual and a Japanese person could still get a Saturn in 1999 and not be considered terribly anachronistic.)

Super NES
Sega Dreamcast
Playstation 2 Slim
Game Boy Advance SP

While we're at it let's list the main reason for getting it.

I got the SNES to play Fire Emblem Seisen no Keifu, the Dreamcast for Soul Calibur and Shenmue, the PS2 and GBA were replacements.

some time ago I wanted to buy PS2 to my parents' house for times when the whole family gets together there, so we can play some classics, but as these situations are very rare (and we never get bored while there) I decided not to...

Exact same story with me. I also meant to pick up Skies of Arcadia but never found a copy. :(

Yeah, neither have I. Soul Calibur came with the Dreamcast lot and I happened to find Shenmue for a decent price around the same time. Funny thing the guy who sold it to me shipped them separately, so I got my Dreamcast around a week or so before I actually received the wires and controllers.
Last time I got drunk I almost bought a Genesis on Amazon. "Like New" and only a few dollars. Looking back on it I'm glad I opted not to.

I bought a brand new game recently and when I received it it looked like someone cut a price tag off with a box cutting knife.

Well yeah they discount for damage to the goods like a scratch on the......serial number.

Are you saying that Sega Saturn was popular in Japan in 2011 ?

As for me, I've never boughten a console retro-actively. I would, however I don't like buying things used, and getting those new at this point would be way too expensive.

Wait... I bought a PSP last year, would that count?

It was pretty cheap, but the listing never mentioned any damages. It said it was brand new and in the original plastic wrap, which it wasn't.
I bought a Super Nintendo to play Super Mario World at my own pace, as I used to play it at a friend's place and loved it.

It's still the only game I have for that console.
I didn't buy it, but I got an older SNES that my grandmother was going to get rid of as well as a few games (although I was disappointed that Super Metroid wasn't in that collection of games, but it was a decent amount of games that I remember playing years ago).

I ONLY buy consoles when they're no longer popular -- can't afford them, otherwise!

SNES and N64 I bought for cheap, cheap.

Sega Genesis, TurboGraphx, and PS2 I "inherited" from my family members when they upgraded. lol~ I still play on all of them except the TruboGraphx, as I now have Ys Book I & II on PC, and it's been extended since the original incarnation! :D
I don't think I've ever bought a console retroactively in the way you describe, but if my PS3 broke down, I'd buy another PS3, not a PS4.

Same here, especially considering PS4 isn't backwards compatible with the 120+ PS3 games I own, lol

Ahahahahaha! Well, now that you mention it, I should probably rewrite the opening post.

The PSP last year, I would say that's kinda iffy, in Japan it would probably not count. But, seeing as how you're in America I would say yes, I would say that the PSP in America's heyday ended as soon as the Vita came out.
