Hello fellow GOGers,

While on the website of Sega a few mins ago I saw this "Sega Mega Drive Classic Collection: Gold Edition". The only information regarding its price that I could find was on GamersGate: around 70USD for 45 classics. Thus I'd like to know whether it is worth getting if I happen to see it in a store etc or shall I pass on it? Do you think it is too much for such a bundle?

Oh and as among those titles is Virtua Fighter 2, I'd like to ask something: I found this game a few years ago in a video game store, bought it for around 3USD (it is new and still packed in its original plastic wrap) Would it be worth anything if I'd suddently want to sell it on the internet? Just asking as sometimes in stores over here one can find very old games (still with their original packing) for only a couple of bucks.
Back in October, there was a Sega bundle of 40+ games for $10. If you're not in a hurry, I'd just wait for the bundle to come around again.

Also, steam has this bundle for $30:

Also I'm rather certain it's just a collection of the Sega Classic collections 1-5 with maybe a few extras? And the content of that has been released so often it's likely not that big a deal to get unless you haven't got any of them.

Back before I got an Xbox 360 this was released http://www.amazon.co.uk/SEGA-Mega-Drive-Ultimate-Collection/dp/B001P5HX0O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1359798116&sr=8-1
When I got around to getting an XBox for large screen gaming, it wasn't really available anywhere around and considering I'd already got the mega drive collection 1-4 on Steam (which seems to be the exact content of the gold collection) I didn't really bother with tracking it down.

No clue how SC-Wholesale is, but that's a 3rd party seller on amazon uk selling the gold collection for £4 ( around $7). So yeah $70 is a bit much for such a bundle considering they've been pushing out bundles with the same content for over 10 years now. Also they've released a new collection (volume 5) which isn't in the gold collection (according to their site). So if you see only a few games you want there, go with the individual collections. If you just want to get a large collection of genesis games at least wait till you find it on sale. $70 seems a bit steep for some of the most re-packaged games out there.

GG has a more complete version then Steam -

Seems to be missing Volume 5, which was IMHO the best of the batch with Phantasy Star 2-4, Monster WOrld, Beyond Oasis and Dynamite Headdy.

mm, the gold version was published before v5 was made - about a year or so. I expect some form of platinum version in about 6 months.... followed by v6.

Crap, never mind.

Sega's collections are confusing. :( Be sure you know what you're getting.

While I have no experience with Sega's store, various collections are available on many sites. I believe Gamersgate's Gold Edition is identical to the retail 'Sega Genesis Classic Collection Gold Edition'. Its description lists volumes 1-4 but that should be ignored as you can't purchase individual volumes.

Steam and Gamersgate also sell 'Sega Genesis Classics' pack 1-5. Classics packs 1-4 are similar but not identical to the Gold edition's volumes 1-4. They have been stripped of the Sonic and ToeJam&Earl games but have Shadow Dancer and Eternal Champions in their place. Classics pack 5 is 100% comprised of games not present in the Gold Edition.

Gamersgate's Gold Edition and Classics packs use the same emulator. Gamersgate's Genesis/Mega Drive games must be downloaded individually while Steam downloads them all under one entry. I have no experience with the retail Gold Edition.

Thanks for this post. I got curious and checked out Amazon for shits and giggles and you can get a Sega 46 pack for around 6 or 7 USD on CD ROM (or download but I hate downloading fram Amazon). Comes complete with more updated quick save options and pc friendly interface.

I've got a nice similar Activision Atari 2600 compilation like this and I've been dying for a good Sega. Nintendo needs to get it's head out of it's ass and put something together for those of us raised on NES. Sure there are ROMS but they are clearly ports and lack the little touches that a full conversion can bring.

441635, big +1 for this. Regardless of the intent of your post you just set me up with a very nice collection for a very tasty price! Thanks!

EDIT: Just bought it from Amazon for about $4 not counting shipping. Some retailers on there have it for $2 but their ratings aren't really high. I'll fork over a few extra bucks for friendly customer service.

Wow glad I could be of any help to you tinyE, and thanks all of you guys for sharing your opinion on the matter.
Doesn't the retail disc have SecuROM DRM?

Please post at some point regarding what kind of DRM it's using when on disc. I've had some...interesting experiences with DRM. The best one being the PC version of Taito Legends 2 which (at least in EU) was released with Starforce DRM on the disc. More interesting being that the games could be copied out of the roms folder into a mame folder, and most of the games would then work with the current version of Mame.

Sure. The game went out today, it will probably be here Thursday or Friday and I'll post when I get it running, It didn't say anything about StarForce in the description and that is one DRM that is a breaking point for me. I can take a few passwords and tweaks but that damn thing infest your whole computer!

Thank you. The Sega Smash pack I bought back then had a simple CD check and encrypted roms. But no big amount of BS. I was rather surprised at Starforce being there on Taito 2. Most other arcade collections I've bought have been for PS2 (and the IREM collection from dotemu) so I don't know what the default is
