Ok so I'm in Afghanistan back on the main base for a very short period of time. I have a netbook with me and I'd like to download a game, but the connection is extremely slow and you only have a half hour - a few hours to try and download something.
I was trying for Fallout which is only 508 mb, but that is taking around 6 hours or so. Anyone know of a smaller game that is at least moderately fun?

The Ishar Compilation is 44MB. I can't vouch for them myself, but some people seem to swear by them.

Duke Nukem 3D - 29MB
Beneath a Steel Sky - 74MB
Heroes of Might and Magic - 64MB
Lure of the Temptress - 13MB

Cannon Fodder, Blake Stone, Duke Nukem 3D or Rise of the Triad.

Cannon Fodder :D classic game and around 20mb if i remember

Waxworks weighs in at 14 MB...

BASS, And Lure of the Temptress are a good bet, small, fun and free.
Personal Nightmare at 7 MB is probably the smallest. As for how much fun it is, i have it wishlisted, haven't played it yet.

Realms of Arkania 1+2 is 71mb in total.

I vote for Duke 3D. When you get a faster connection, you can then download more addons for it such as DukePlus

Also have you tried a download manager that would let you continue a download over multiple days?

Yeah, first thing I tried, but given that the computer I have to use is a public one I can't.
