15,504 ways to play!

Decisions, decisions, decisions. Once the holiday season gets closer, you have to decide what gifts to buy, what wrapping to use, which phone numbers to accidentally delete. There are many decisions to make as you get ready for the holidays, but one decision that we’re making easy for you is, “Should I buy anything from GOG.com’s Black Friday sale?” (The answer is “yes”, by the way. ;) Not only are we launching the sale early--in case you spend Friday in a turkey-induced coma--but we’re also giving you the power to pick your own promo!

In our Pick 5 & Pay $10 sale you pick 5 out of twenty fantastic indie games and pay $10 for them regardless of the game’s regular full price. That's $2 per game, for such titles like Torchlight, Resonance, Alan Wake's American Nightmare, Botanicula, Geneforge 1-5, Uplink, To the Moon, and many others. Seven of these games are both PC and Mac compatible, so everyone can enjoy!

The games are fantastic--and there are so many of them! That's why we started this sale early: to give you time to pick your dream-set of 5 games out of 15,504 possible combinations. You could look at this as another decision you have to make this year, but unlike trying to figure out who you should sit next to your slightly crazy uncle at Thanksgiving dinner, this one’s fun!

Black Friday marks the start of the “shopping season” for the holidays, so don’t forget to buy the gift of GOG for a gamer you love--or even just kind of like. You can’t spread much more holiday joy than this for just $10.
Great promo, thanks.
Is Mutant Mudds really worth it ???
I mean it's a port from a 3DS game...

Any thoughs about the game ??

Fenixp: Yes, except for this one. See, I wasn't actually belittling you, I was trying to prove a point - Simon can't possibly know what people over at GOG are thinking and what their motivations are, yet he's acting as if he does. That's just not 'backed-up and impartial,' neither is it any form of actual criticism - he's just voicing his opinion, and yes, be it GOG or any other entity, I try to look at things from a positive perspective. When Steam introduced regional pricing, my first impression... Well my first impression was 'bullshit!' but soon after that I started defending Steam because, well, it probably wasn't all that much because of the pressure from Valve. I just dislike when you're trying to condemn someone on the basis of speculations - as far as we know, GOG still believes those sales are harming the industry.
I love you too!

Honestly, both of you :o (is that a kiss, I don't know).

Anyway, while I don't argue that I'm implying certain factors of GOG here, I do so knowingly and willingly because that is what I was trained to do. Hardly ever anybody says the truth, and in my profession you learn to evaluate peoples behaviour on previous actions, circumstance and motives.

And my criticism on GOG here (which is not the sale, but their bad marketing beforehand), is based around objective factors. Size, timing and circumstances of their sales.

Maybe TET really thinks that those sales hurt the industry in the long run. But that is his opinion. Whatever is coming out of the blue is GOG policy. And every indication shows that GOG doesn't give two shits about those concerns. What makes it even worse is, that GOG is trying to whitewash themselves on the backs of their customers. "We don't want to earn all the money made by those deals, but the greedy customers force us".

Also interestingly (but I would need to look that up), everytime on of GOGs rather unfortunate statements is made, it isn't TET (or any other marketing guy) but someone higher up. TET usually has to clean up afterwards.

GOGs is simply extremely opportunistic. Which isn't bad, they are a company after all. It would be bad if they weren't. What I dislike is the fact that they think we so stupid that we won't notice if they sucker us up.

Yes; well, I like it anyway. I was skeptical at first too. Anyway, it's good if you like challenging platformers, some of the later levels are particularly good.
I was debating whether to buy the Geneforge series or wait and hope for a sale.

As Geneforge is normally 14.99 this promo is a no brainer for me.

But I still need some advice....

That means four more to choose. I already have Torchlight. I'm not really into puzzle games.

Do any of the other games in the promo' have any 're playability '?

Thanks in advance

keeveek: You mean promos that get bigger the more games you buy?
Especially them, but even in the flat discount promos, you don't normally end up buying again games you already have. So you never have to ponder "Gee, I have these games from this promo already, so is it still a good value?".

avatar
keeveek: I remember them saying they didn't work well. Most people are not "devoted" buyers, and when they've seen "buy 2 get 30% or buy more get 40% , 50% and more" thought "pssshhhh... I'm not buying anything" , and this is why they dropped that type of promos.
I don't recall seeing them say that, but maybe so. I mostly remember some users being very vocally against them because they were interested in buying only one or two games from the promo, and didn't get the full discount with them.

I recall GOG has had some such increasing discount promos quite lately too, or could be that you got a bigger discount when you selected (or already had) certain amount of the games. So it seemed to be they haven't fully buried that model.

I don't quite understand the point about "devoted buyers". After all, other digital stores have used mega bundles before where the price per item is much lower than buying only some of the games (in smaller bundles), or even single games. E.g. Steam seems to have many of those during their summer and Christmas sales, and I don't see people condemning them for it. They are basically rewarding those who buy more games in one swoop, somewhat like GOG with the increasing discount bundles.

Not to mention, those mega bundles don't take into account if you have some of the games from the same service already, so in practise you end up buying many of the games several times, unless you are a totally new user. Unfortunately these new GOG promo types have that same feature, even if they give you a gift code for the overlapping games.

Anyways, I hope GOG keeps experimenting with different kinds of promos, and not cling to only certain promo type that rewards only certain type of users.

but the controls are a bit iffy, which is important in a platformer. I have died many times because of them, and not of a fault of my own

You've got that right.

Just watch this video, which shows how people act in a group: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2hapwnFwaE

In terms of replayability, your best bets would be any of the Introversion games (Darwinia, Multiwinia, Defcon, Uplink).

The beauty of this kind of promo is that it makes me try games I wouldn't otherwise have bought, like the Wadjet Eye Games series. And the deal is so good that I went back for a second set of 5 and bought games that I had already bought elsewhere just to have them without the DRM (and in the case of Machinarium, because they deserve it!)

Long live GOG!

DukeNukemForever: Let me guess: Alan Wake is on the wishlist and the other two missing games are Symphony and Unmechanical? Welcome to the club ;-)
Close, only that my priority would be Unmechanical. ;)

But I'm only mildly interested in any of these three, and I'm afraid that my 2.1GHz duocore and onboard graphic card from 2007 would struggle with all of them. Something that IMO could really help promote indie games on GOG - at least the ones that haven't been in bundles yet - would be the inclusion of demos. Not as a bonus for pre-orders, but for customers who haven't decided on buying the game yet, partly because they fear it might not work. I understand that it doesn't make much sense to offer demos for the old games, but I'd really appreciate it if more indie developers let you test their game before buying. I don't care where such a demo would be hosted, on GOG, the dev's website or another server, but I usually won't spend $15 dollars or more on something that I might not even be able to play.

Good deal, but I got all WadjetEye stuff from WadjetEye and all Amanita stuff on disc (and most of the other stuff I'd want from bundles), so that doesn't leave too much to pick from.
Hmm seems like we can pick 5, pay, then pick 5 others ... Not sure this is intended
