lettmon: I recently played through the Splinter Cell trilogy on the ps3 for the first time - I thought they were good games but not great. I liked Alpha Protocol more.
The ports of those games were absolutely terrible... well the first two atleast. The graphics were cut down and the framerate good god. Even the under powered ps2 had a higher framerate!

StingingVelvet: Chaos Theory is amazing and the true standout of the series. It's not quite up to Thief standards because it's much more linear, but it's very good.

Thief: Deadly Shadows is probably a great in-between for a more modern gamer... non-linear and with deep gameplay, but it has optional third-person and is more streamlined than the first two.
How is being linear makes it inferior?

They both take advantage of its gameplay.
If you only play one game in the Splinter Cell Series play Chaos Theory.

Alpha Protocol you can use stealth as your advantage but it's linear (structural) like Splinter Cell and isn't used as the main point of the game like in Thief series, all three are great though.

I can't recommend Mark of the Ninja enough but it's a 2D platformer too, might be not the typical stealth game people enjoy.

Hitman games are also fun.

There are a few I've played that are good too: Death to Spies, Deus Ex, Dishonored, Psi-Ops, Batman AA/AC, Second Sight, NOLF 1/2, Dark Messiah.

I like stealth games. :P

I wonder if I should see if I can get Spy Fiction and the Tenchu series, might be fun on the PS2 emulator.

I generally prefer large open environments to corridors, in all genres. Not a hard and fast rule really, but overall my preference. I still called Chaos Theory an amazing game, so obviously it's not a deal-breaker.

...

Death to Spies,
I consider these two more puzzle games or adventure games, honestly. They can have some stealth in them but in general the gameplay is more about figuring out what to do.

True, I should probably have divided games into stealth games and games with stealth elements.

Are they realy that dreadfull ? I know HD ports are kinda meh, but there are old games. Plus its apparently the only way to get Pandora Tomorrow since its seems its not working on PC anymore, the question is : Is it worth it ?

tinyE: Unless I missed it no one mentioned Riddick EFBB. I wouldn't call it a pure stealth game but there is A LOT of it in there and it's IMO handled beautifully. The sneak up behind/snap the neck move is one of my personal faves as well as the timeless 'shimmy over and drop down kill'.

And yes I know the OP didn't ask about Riddick but it deserves mention in any conversation about stealth.
I heard this one had a good stealth system, plus its sci-fi, thanks for reminding me :)

I played most of them, Deus Ex, Dark Messiah and Dishonored begin absolute favorites, I'd like to play the NOLF series again if I could find them somewhere. I also like Mark of the Ninja but I'd prefer something more "realistic/modern" right after the MGS.

If you like MGS you should look at Gorky Zero: Beyond Honor and Aurora Watching (aka Soldier Elite) these games share a lot of elements with MGS.
Only trouble is where to find them.

In terms of performance I didn't experience any problems, but the first two games look very plain, even for me who doesn't mind aged graphics. But I don't regret getting this trilogy, it cost 30 usd so it's 10 usd a game - fair price. Used copies can probably be found twice cheaper on ebay.

Gorky Zero is like 40 bucks on amazon. I just checked around a week ago, so its funny you posted this.

Anyway, I used to be a huge fan of the Splinter Cell Series. I even own all of the books. For some reason I loved Pandora Tomorrow the most, even though I know Chaos Theory to be Superior in many ways. The last one that came out wasn't really a Splinter Cell game, but it was still enjoyable, especially if you liked the Bourne series and Taken.

The newest one coming out is sans Michael Ironside, so I'll probably wait until its 2 dollars somewhere.
I rather liked Splinter Cell 1. Bought Pandora Tomorrow for the multiplayer (and was rather upset at having to make a Ubi account to even play, one of the first games apart from Steam games which forced me to create an account to play online)
Liked Chaos Theory quite a lot as well.

Then came Double Agent, I don't know if it's just the PC version, or a problem specific to me, but I found it horrible. The game refused to run on my machine until I installed a 32-bit XP on it (rather than the 64-bit vista), and even then for a stealth game I kinda expected to see where there were shadows. Either it was glitchy beyond reason, or that game just has one lightmap for graphics and a completely different one for where you're visible. I quit that not too far in because I got tired of standing in light being told I was concealed, and rushing to a dark corner where I had trouble making myself out on screen but enemies had no such problems.

Conviction...is a shooter. With light stealth elements. But a shooter nontheless.

I've enjoyed Monaco recently. Not even same genre but it has some nice stealthy elements to it and supports 4 player local coop.
But other than that, I'd lend my voice to Riddick too for a good actiony stealth game. Though at least for me the AI in the one bundled with Dark Athena seems to have gotten more cheap than the original wrt. seeing in the dark and super hearing.

These games seem to be totally off everybodies radar, except yours and mine =), but I think they should be on gog as we have Gorky 17 ( which plays different), still I think the sequels are rather entertaining.
