I'm looking for something like Romance of the Three Kingdoms online.

What I liked about it was the main focus on your kingdom you were building, leveling up it's defenses and buildings giving advantage to game play (like better chance of finding a good hero unit to hire visiting your town)

I also liked that not everything had to be a micro-managed battle, you could outfit your hero or whatever with a key item to help them and send them on missions to come back to and report from telling about what they found or just leveling up their experience.

On top of that you were not just going after rival kingdoms but could also dispatch parties to investigate dungeons for treasure and such.

Finally you could also manage your kingdom through finer diplomatic and political controls.

But I'm not looking for Europa titles ....those are just one big boring map with millions of things going on all over it nad bit of an ass to keep with - especially if you're short on patience.
Eador: Genesis here on GOG?

Its part Kings Bounty and Heroes of Might and Magic. I'm not familiar with Romance of the Three Kingdoms but much of your description for that game can be put towards Eador as well.

The main difference from the sounds of it is hero units don't visit you. You buy them as you can afford it and level them up. And the cost increases greatly for each one you purchase. Plus, they all start at level 1 even if you buy a new one late game.

Battles aren't micro managed. You can automate them but I've not tried that yet as I prefer telling my units what to do - fighting is just like in HoMM/KB games. You get items for your heroes, exp, resources, etc.

The game is involved, engrossing and harder than it looks. Can't just get a hero and start steamrolling. It takes a bit of patience (but nowhere near Europa or the Crusader Kings games) and the right mix of units to go into dungeons and opposing provinces.

Better than Warlock :) and I've gone back to Eador after spending a week or two on that game.

I have not played them (though owning both on Steam), but it sounds like you are describing Majesty 1 and Majesty 2.

Lots of good turn based and real time historical/strategy games out there where you can choose to let the computer fight the tactical battles for you. I do that quite frequently when I'm not in the mood to monitor stupid archers that can't figure out how to keep their distance from the enemy swordsmen...

Yeah, this is pretty much what I've narrowed it down to as well.

Not sure what Majesty 2 is like yet but one seems to be a mission based RTS protecting a kingdom from the little I've played.

Evil Genius?
Being familiar with the Romance series, I'll second the suggestion of Eador: Genesis. Fantastic game and insidiously addictive.
