Aliasalpha: My guess is that the java applet accesses the windows hardware reporting system in much the same way a game's system requirements check does only in this instance the java applet would be storing that informantion as temorary variables and squiting it back to the server for analysis. Any time something attempts to access the hardware of a system, there's the chance of a BSOD, I'm guessing there's some sloppy code in the java applet that your PC reacted badly to.
That or the R2 simply has malware installed
